U.S. Army troops recover an Apache attack helicopter from a field near the restive central Iraqi town of Falluja January 13, 2004. Iraq 's U.S. Governor Paul Bremer said guerrilla attacks had fallen dramatically in the wake of Saddam Hussein 's capture, and the United Nations planned to assess safety for a possible return of international U.N. staff. U.S. soldiers killed at least four Iraqi civilians in a town at the heart of guerrilla attacks on Tuesday, witnesses said, while the Apache crashed nearby after an apparent ground fire attack. Two crewmen escaped unhurt. (Akram Saleh/Reuters)

Iraqis gather around a truck which Iraqi police said was fired upon by American forces before slamming into another truck in Fallujah, Iraq Tuesday Jan. 13, 2004. According to witnesses, American forces opened fire killing two and wounding four after they were attacked in Fallujah following a protest in the city over the detention of a 17-year-old woman the day before. Today in the News:

U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, an elder statesman among liberal Democrats, slammed President Bush and his administration for going to war in Iraq based on political considerations and that if Congress and the American people knew the whole truth, America would never have gone to war."

Spain's PM Says "Bush acts like an emperor. President Bush is seen in Europe as an emperor, and many Europeans find that difficult to accept. "The combination of being a Republican, of being an emperor, a Texan and outspoken is really a bad mix," Aznar said in an interview Wednesday in The Washington Post.

George Bush's former treasury secretary Paul O'Neill, who is being investigated after publicly criticising the president, denied yesterday that he had taken secret documents. Mr O'Neill came under fire last week after an authorised book about his time at the White House, The Price of Loyalty, described Mr Bush as a disengaged figure lead by a "praetorian guard" of hardline rightwingers who were committed to invading Iraq from the beginning of his presidency.

In the meantime, Bu$h announced today his plans to send astronauts to the moon, Mars and beyond on missions sure to cost hundreds of billions of dollars. It was the president's second headline-grabbing announcement in recent days, after his immigration proposal last week.
