Blind Must Be Able to Vote Alone in Fla.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A judge ruled Wednesday that blind and physically impaired voters must be provided with an audio system that allows them to vote independently.

The decision stems from a dispute in Duval County, where Supervisor of Elections John Stafford was sued in 2001 after he bought Diebold equipment without an audio capability. He testified at the non-jury trial he could not use Diebold voting machines with audio capability because the state had not certified them.

Wednesday's ruling by Senior U.S. District Judge Wayne Alley said the lack of such machines violated the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The judge said the state must certify the audio-capable voting machines or the county must get another system. He gave them four months to comply. <snip>
