I need a crash course on Columbian politics/events/culture, etc.

I just met a new friend from Columbia, and she has only been in the counrty for a few months. I know the U.S. has a long and troublesome relationship with Columbia (Reagan?), so I want to make sure I don't say anything offensive or incorrect. We are getting together for the first time on Friday. Any links or info on Columbia would be a greatly appreciated!!

I don't think she works outside the home. She speaks great english, and said she went to a school in Columbia where they spoke only english. Like you said, I'm assuming she comes from a prosperous family.
