Pride of America sinks!
Now, here's a story that's hard to beat for symbolism...

Norwegian Cruise Lines recently received special legislation that would allow them to sail between U.S. ports without stopping at a foreign port, something which only used to be allowed for U.S.-built and -staffed ships owned by U.S. companies (of which there have been none for many years). As part of this deal, NCL would build future ships in the U.S., but was allowed to complete one such ship already under construction in Germany first.

That ship was to be called the "Pride of America."

Well, as of yesterday, the Pride of America managed to do the Titanic one better by sinking while still under construction, before even setting sail for the first time.

Fortunately, since it was still at the pier, and therefore in shallow water, they should be able to pump it out and get it sailing again, but repairing the damage is going to take a long time.

Hmmm...wouldn't it be appropriate if the Pride of America, now underwater, won't be fully restored until after November 2004?

;-)

3. How many people will want
to cruise on a ship that sank before it sailed?
