If I were president...
Edited on Thu Jan-15-04 01:55 PM by Smirky McChimpster
Given a supportive Congress, I would:

1. investigate and punish: Bush, Cheney, Rove, Ashcroft, Rumsfeld, Delay, and Halliburton for treason and war crimes.

2. lower the media cap from 45% to 20% (break them up)
reinstate the fairness doctrine

3. raise the highest tax braket from mid-30's to 50%.
tax dividends at the same rate as income

4. raise the minimum wage to $10/ hr.

5. end tax loopholes and offshore shenanigans.

6. make education the largest expense in the budget.
fully fund education, double teacher salaries

7. allow environmental group to determine the policy of the EPA

8. balance the budget

9. legalize marijuana

10. end the death penalty.

11. fully fund soc. security

12. socialize medical insurance

13. lower political donations to $1,000, no $100 (good call)
and campaign finance reform

on edit:
14. apologize to the UN, give up all contracts, pay reparations (fund Iraq development for free), and find Osama

15. fund the development of solar and wind energy

swinging the pendulum the other way baby!

4. The only edit on your platform
that I would possibly change is $100 dollar limit to campaigns.

5. You are going to hate me, but.......
IMHO, there is no quicker way (other than a direct takeover by the government of private business) to kill the economy.

I am sure you have good intentions, but it would collapse our system. Double-digit unemployment overnight, hyperflation, and the markets would crumble.

Taxes like that would drive virtually every company offshore, no new businesses would open, and those that can't move would die out.

7. Companies don't run from taxes
That is just what they want you to believe.
In Europe, the average tax rate is much higher than in the US. Not only do corporations not RUN from Europe, they are still able to compete with US companies.

I'm with Smirky. Corporations need to pay their fair share, like the rest of us. And if they don't like it...move out (my favorit Republican argument). Of course we will be reconcidering our current trade policy too, won't we Smirky?

And by the way, I agree that this is pretty much Kucinich's program.

So my question to Smirky is: "Are you electable?" ;)

8. But......
We are talking about US companies, not Euro companies. US companies most certainly run from taxes and high property prices. I have worked for a few that have made location decisions based on that alone.

US companies are used to the tax rate in the US. It's what they know. If taxes go through the roof, then there are more than enough small nations out there that would love to have them move in, at a tax rate that those companies consider miniscule.

9. If those loopholes exist, they are already using them.
Since Bush removed the minimum tax, none of the big corperations are paying a dime anyway.

It's absurd. Even companies that make huge profits are somehow tax-exempt.

By the way, I read an interesting article promoting progressive taxes the other day (might have been here). Apparently people and/or companies in the highest tax brackets make much more use of services that are funded through taxes. For instance, the court system is mostly used for corporate law.

Anyway, back to the subject, companies already have their headquarters in the Bahamas and the Antilles. If they want to do that, then that is fine. But for starters lets bump them off the NYSE.

6. Add something about reducing the military budget by at least half
and you have my vote, Smirky!

Oh, and add Richard Perle and James Baker to your treason list of people to try for war crimes and treason.

10. I would outlaw tinted windws on cars that are so dark you can't
see inside. These darkened windows make it easy for the police and highway patrol to be ambushed.

This may not be a huge issue in the USA Inc., but it is with me!
