About 100 Iraqi women led by a minister protested in central Baghdad against a Governing Council proposal to scrap the secular family affairs code and place it under Muslim religious jurisdiction.

"I am outraged how the decision was taken," public works minister Nesrine al-Barwari told AFP.

"Iraq (news - web sites) is a multi-ethnic and multi-confessional society and the Governing Council must be more sensitive to this and it must create a true dialogue when it comes to these matters."

At the demonstration in Ferdus Square women stood behind banners that read: "No to discrimination between men and women in the new Iraq," and "We reject decision 137 (of the Governing Council) which undermines the Iraqi family and society."

before we started messing with Iraq they had the most progressive civil code on family affairs in the Middle East.

1. Laura couldnt give a shit about Eye-Rack-Ee women. Or any other women
for that matter.
She's at the ranch baking cookies and sweeping off the porch, doing all the things a good christian stepford wife is supposed to do.

2. AMEN!!
How could she begin to care about the suffering of women half-way across the world when she can't be bothered to care about women suffering here?

If she really wanted to help world-wide suffering, she would convince her husband to resign.

4. But...but...we liberated them!
Yeah, like the Soviets liberated Czechoslovakia in 1968. Liek Hitler liberated the Poles in 1939.

And if the Busheviks think the Imperial Amerikan Subjects they rule are dumb animals, just what do they think of the Iraqis they now rule?

5. the women of Iraq are a lot more worse off now, and they are over half ...
of the population there. Or perhaps the bush administration doesn't count them.
