Poll question: Did you gain or lose respect for Jimmy Carter when he said that he |
|
Edited on Sat Jan-17-04 02:41 AM by lcordero
"lusted in his heart"?
What did Jimmy Carter say that created such a stir? Carter took a lot of heat for admitting to Playboy's Barry Golson and Robert Scheer that he "lusted in his heart" in our November 1976 issue. Asked about his religious beliefs, Carter replied, "Christ said, 'I tell you that anyone who looks on a woman with lust has in his heart already committed adultery.' I've looked on a lot of women with lust. I've committed adultery in my heart many times. This is something that God recognizes I will do -- and I have done it -- and God forgives me for it. But that doesn't mean that I condemn someone who not only looks on a woman with lust but who leaves his wife and shacks up with somebody out of wedlock. Christ says, Don't consider yourself better than someone else because one guy screws a whole bunch of women while the other guy is loyal to his wife."

1. I rememer buying that copy of -- |
|
-- Playboy. My mother wondered how serious I was about the Carter interview.
I really did buy it for that reason.
I respected Carter more for saying what he said, but liked and respected him more when a lot of fundamentalist Christians came out against him for granting the interview.
One notably manipulative Texas Baptist preacher condemned Carter for granting an interview to "a salacious and pornograhic magazine."
As soon as the fundies turned against him, I liked him even more. When the right wing turned on Clinton over the Lewinsky deal, I liked Clinton better.

3. I had no respect for Carter until… |
|
he took full responsibility for the failed rescue of the Iran hostages. Until then and even now, NOBODY in that office has ever accepted or taken responsibility for their actions or inactions or delegation to the mission as he owned up to it. God bless him. He turned me around and allowed me to believe that there are really some people that want to serve and lead this country to make us all better for it.
He was not popular at the time, but his legacy both in and post presidency is a testament to his integrity and humanity. Yes, it was temporarily overshadowed by Bonzo (Reagan) fraud, but Carter’s statesmanship has since been recognized. (Hello Nobel.)
So, come on, does anybody care about an admission of lusting in the heart after Clinton? What’s your real agenda and who do you work for?

7. I had respect for him WAY before the hostage crisis.... |
|
He came out in 78 or 79 and flat ass said the OIL COMPANIES ARE RIPPING US OFF. What tu tu wearing Dem in office now would embark on such a statement today?

let's not forget that Carter continued to work to get the hostages freed even after he was VOTED OUT OF OFFICE!!! AND, he did it through talking and negotiations (which I must admit I don't know the details of) and am pretty sure he never traded weapons for them, can someone back me up or debunk me on that? Meanwhile, the Reagan who said loud and clear, we do not bargain with terrorists, ended up giving them arms for hostages. I don't know, maybe it's me but I would prefer to have a president who does what he says and had the balls to try a rescue operation.

5. Stuff like that does not even register on my radar |
|
It was a total non-issue... just like the Bush-Nazi ads are now..a non-issue..
It's just so disgusting that "journalists" are so devoid or ideas, that they pounce on silly stuff and run it into the ground..
Instead of asking the probing or insightful question, they would rather ask about something they said to someone else, and then just magnify it to get their own angle..
The bigger question is this.. What are journalism majors learning in college?? They don't seem to be turning them out with any sense of investigative skills:(

I don't think it's anyone's business, just like Clinton's consensual sex with Monica.

6. LOL,the screw loose idiots in the Repig party REALLY thought they had him. |
|
I remember it well, boy that was it for ole' Jimmy,Jerry and Bob Dole were as good as in the Oval Office. Opps, backfired on them, instead of the country damning Carter they rallied behind him because of his truthfulness and his general easy going style. If Repugs can't buy elections then they always work the SEX angle...over and over and over.
He did some bonehead things while Pres but overall I think he did alot of good. Look what he's done since he's been out of office mainly for Habitat for Humanity. He's an inspiration IMO...

17. I have always liked Jimmah Cartah |
|
I saw him last night on this show on A&E called "Between the Lines", and even though I was about 16 when he was in office, I remember feeling that he was a genuine, good man who cared about people... and his work with Habitat for Humanity and his humanitarian work around the world just make him that much more a treasure that American has.

13. Lust is another form of passion |
|
I don't know if its lack "proves that they lie," but, to me, it certainly proves that their outlook on life is extremely bland and out of touch with genuine human existence.
Give me a leader with passion, someone whose blood still stirs in their veins, someone who knows how it feels to be moved deep down in one's soul by something other than money!
Passion. It's the color of love, the color of blood, and the sweet essence of life.

That the media was biased back then too. Carter got beat up about some small things, while Reagan got a free pass. Carter wasn't perfect but I always believed he was a good person.

18. well, there certainly was no love lost between Carter and the press |
|
he made himself a moving target as far as they were concerned--he wasn't as cooperative as, says Reagan was, but then again, unless Nancy was whispering in his ear, Reagan just thought he needed to stand and wait til they said "action".
