SCotUS Refuses to Block TX Redistricting Steal
Not a ruling on the merits of the case, but allows the March primary to proceed according to the Tom DePlane-DePlane DELAY plan.

.... After a legislative fight that included three special sessions and weeks of uncertainty during court challenges, the new districts were locked in Friday when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to block the plan passed by the Legislature and upheld earlier this month by a federal court in Austin.

During the lengthy redistricting engagement, Democratic state senators and representatives fled to other states in separate, ultimately futile attempts to undermine the GOP effort.

The Supreme Court made no judgment on the merits of the Democrats' appeal argument that the redistricting plan dilutes minority voting strength.

But the court rejected Democrats' plea for an emergency stay of the boundaries. The justices must still decide whether they will consider the Democrats' appeal, but the court is unlikely to take any action before the election. ....

1. If they rule against gerrymandering in Pennsylvania, Veith case, then
If they rule against Republican gerrymandering in Pennsylvania, Veith case, then the TX case can be re-opened.

A ruling in Veith case will be made by June 2004.

I'm not getting my hopes up, I'm just saying.

2. Me, Too
But the PA case would go to the heart of the matter and override everything else, right?

7. Yes. If they rule against Pennsylvania redistricting, then
Yes. If they rule against Pennsylvania redistricting, then the Texas case will be re-opened.

Unfortunately, while the plaintiffs refer to Democratic gerrymandering examples in their briefs, Pennsylvania was gerrymandered by Republicans.

I wish the Democrats had been more organized and purposely DIDN'T appeal any cases of Republican gerrymandering to the US Supreme Court. They should have waited for the Republicans to appeal a case of Democratic gerrymandering to the US Supreme Court, where an anti-gerrymandering ruling would be more likely.

5. I live in Austin
And this sucks. You have no idea.

The district I now live in stretches to the Mexico border. The University of Texas, in the middle of the city, is lumped into a San Antonio district.

I've lived in Austin all my life (I'm 37). But, the climate continues growing more inhospitable. Honestly, I don't recognize the city I was born in anymore. I'm considering leaving my career and attending graduate school in the Northwest. It would be a welcome break.

The wheel of karma will get them one of these days! :)
