All Liberal Website Owners Read This !

I was thinking of starting a banner exchange program
for Liberal websites only. Something to get us all
more traffic to our websites other than link
trades. Let's face it a lot of people don't click
on our link pages so this would get our websites
some extra hits.

With a banner rotation program they would see your
banner ad, and even if they don't click it right then they
might remember it and visit your website at a
later time. The banner ads would all be put on the front
page of each website right at the top of the page.

I know you are thinking nobody clicks on banner ads,
I agree, I usually don't either. But most of those
banner ads go to corporate websites that just
want your business. But if I am at a liberal website,
and I see a banner for a liberal website that I have not
been to before, I will click on it and visit that website.

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in
joining such a program. I would host all the banners
on my server and charge a small fee for running
the program and hosting the banners etc.

When I say small fee, I was thinking of maybe $10
a month or $100 a year, I think that is a fair price for
running the program and hosting all the banners etc.
Considering websites like Bartcop charge $10 a day for
a banner ad $10 a month is hell of a deal. And the website
whatreallyhappened.com charges $100 a month with
a 3 month minimum to host a banner ad.

I have a simple javascript that automatically
rotates banners in a random starting order and
then changes to a new banner every 2 or 3 seconds.
Right now I am trying to get about 5 to 10
webmasters to join the banner ad program. If they
do I will run it, I don't want to waste my time
setting it all up if nobody is going to join.

I am also planning to start a new website in a month or
so. I will add the banner program to that website too.

PM me or e-mail me and let me know if you would want
to join the program. If I can get at least 5 webmasters
to join I will start the program and set it all up. My website
(www.oreilly-sucks.com) gets between 20,000 and 30,000
unique hits a month so your banner would be seen by a lot
of people just from my website.

This could be a cheap way for people with liberal websites
to drive traffic to other like minded websites. Not to mention
it would piss off O'Reilly even more. When he visits my website
to see what I am saying about him, he will see all those banners
to liberal websites.

3. If the website owners would network in this way...
There is another thread (several actually) that deal with the subject of "framing" issues, how the right does it and how the left fails at it, at best just reacting to the rights framing of an issue.

The web owners, liberal radio hosts, etc, should network at least weekly, maybe even daily, on how we are going to "frame" an issue. Talk about an issue like "Service Cuts" rather than tax cuts. Or "Corporate Governance" rather than privatization. Every blog, every website, every radio show should have a "segment" on that issue--with the proper framing.

Once a consensus has been reached on the framing of an issue, we should be unanamous in the use of that "frame". Letters to the editor and congresspeople. Call-ins to talk shows.

This is how "they" do it. It works. We've seen it work. It is an honest and ethical tactic. There is NO reason not to do it.

4. Nobody ?

So far no PM's or e-mails, lol. I thought it was a pretty good idea, guess not.

The framing the issues idea is a good one, just not for websites. That would
have to be done on tv and radio and in newspapers etc.

Webmasters just want more people to see their websites so they can inform them
of the truth, not the corporate propaganda they get from cable news. Oh well, if any
webmasters decide to join just let me know.

5. Got One Website Signed Up !

I have one website owner who has agreed to join the program. All I need is
4 more and I will start it up. And I might have a 2nd website that will join, I am
waiting for an answer from the webmaster who said maybe.

Where are all the liberal website owners ?

9. i think networking is very important

i don't presently 'own' a website (though will be online in the next month or so)

the questionW site has been pretty dead, though maybe it will come back as the campaigns really begin. we already have banners in rotation there.

good luck and don't let slow weekend traffic discourage. this will be hard to keep afloat in GD and you might want to consider starting a thread in a quieter forum like the Meeting Room.

11. It's not that it isn't a good idea
But trying to get people on this site MOTIVATED to actually DO something rather than whine, bitch, and moan about it can drive a person crazy.

(Yes, that was, indeed, a mini-rant against my fellow DUers.)

14. That's great - maybe you want to coordinate it with someone from
a larger group? Such as MoveOn, or the new policy institute, CAP(?), or maybe just an advisor that you all agree on?

In that Auletta piece, one of the reporters says that the WH sends emails around so they're all on message.

Liberals don't need a script like that, but we do need to agree on shared goals and strategy.

10. Update.........

I have three webmasters who plan to join the banner exchange program,
and one maybe. All I need is two more and I will get it going. Four if the
maybe says yes, I should know by tonight or tommorrow.

BTW, you can pay the $10 by the month, you don't have to pay by the year. I
would prefer you do, but you don't have to.

I have 3 websites signed up and 2 maybes. That would make 5 if the 2
maybes say yes, and I could get it going.

If you know any webmaster that would be interested let them know about this thread.

16. Here is a Demo !

If you want to see an example of the script go here:

http://www.oreilly-sucks.com/banneradtestpage.htm

Just put your mouse cursor on the banner after it switches numbers
and look in the status bar at the url. It's a pretty neat little script. It
starts with a random banner, then goes through all the banners in
the script. I tested it with IE and netscape, it works perfect for both
browsers.

The sign ups are up to 4 now, all I need is one more. But the more the better.

I would like to get 10 sign ups, but 5 will be enough to get the ball rolling.

20. Don't Like Webrings......
Edited on Sun Jan-18-04 12:23 AM by stewert
The banners are at the top of the pages.

Plus they will rotate automatically, each visitor to the website will see every banner,
whether they click on it or not, as long as they stay on the front page for a minute or
two, which most people do.

With a webring you have to visit each site one at a time, it's nothing like a banner
rotation program.

I only need one more webmaster to sign up and I will start the program.

BTW, those webrings collect personal information on you, which means they probably
sell your e-mail address to spammers.

I don't use webrings, too much hassle, and their privacy policy bothers me.
