I called Kate O'Beiren a media whore

She was standing outside of the Edward's headquarters as the Senator was carrying his kids onto the campaign bus and she was standing there with sunglasses, a late 80's camel colored coat and chain smoking cigarettes flicking the butts on the sidewalk. I was not going to acknowledge her until Juan Williams walked up and she started saying how meaningless this all was and Iowa was such a bore to her. I decided then and there to let her know what a media whore she was. I felt bad after I called her a name to her face, but I think she deserved it. Was I wrong? I went to mediawhoresonline.com and was surprised she was not listed. She made my Iowa hospitality slip away ... hopefully I can make up for it with the 5 Edwards supporters staying at the house.

I wonder if she was nervous seeing in Iowa how the Democrats are totally invigorated to take out Bush. All of the candidates are gettin HUGE crowds. I drove to Winterset, Iowa last night to see Senator Edwards and people had to stand outside of the VFW Hall. It was amazing that a small town could turn out such a crowd.

I'd call those who are supposed to be unbiased "whores"--as in one who sells themselves for money, even though they would rather not ("hey, it's a living," they say). Media personalities like O'Beirn remind me of media sluts. They enjoy doing what they do, perhaps out of opportunism, perhaps to please a male figure in their lives, perhaps even just out of the pure pleasure of it all. They don't sell their "objectivity" like a whore would; they graciously spread their "objective" legs for free, waiting the next "popular kid" who comes their way and mounts them.

Its hard for us DUers to realize that sometimes the best reaction is, especially dealing with narcissistic people, which she sounds like one, is to let them have it in front of other people.

Embarassment is the best form of confrontation for narcissists or highly shallow individuals, because ultimately they dont care about polite criticism, or diplomacy, but what they DO care about, is being embarassed in front of peers.

Image is everything to them. Substance means nothing to them.

In a bit more detail, after she was bad mouthing Iowa, I interrupted and thanked Juan Williams (remembered him from his NPR days) for his comments and then he actually told her he was quite impressed with all of Iowa and Iowans that he had seen this trip. He commented on the great nightlife and great restaurants he had enjoyed downtown DSM and that Dubuque was one of the most beautiful cities he has ever visted with its new aquarium and riverwalk area. Kate just lit up another cigarette - the camel with an overbite is a great comparison, even more so in person.

Finally, the Senator's kids were far away - I wouldn't have made the comment around many other people.

She appeared embarassed by my comment, more so than offended. Almost as if she knows that she is a total whore and the truth hurt a bit. Don't know that many have spoken back to her in a while. Us Iowans are not shy in that regard, but I just hoped the term was not too strong. Thanks for all who have told me NO, it wasn't.

I really get steamed when people come and make fun of this state and its people. We have some of the finest schools in the nation and a resourceful citizenry with an excellent work ethic and who understand and honor the concepts of community and democracy. Iowa has much to be proud of.

Last night, Tweety was making fun of the "abnormal" (his adjective) people in Iowa who come out to sit for three hours and participate in the caucuses. I don't know if it was his idea of making a funny, but he royally po'd me. These caucuses serve other purposes than selecting a candidate...it is where planks for each party's platform are proposes and voted on. They also serve as a place where debate occurs and political differences are resolved within the party and the community.

These snooty, faux intellectuals are not welcome.

She has a responsibility to the public, as an information broker, to tell the truth, unmask the truth, expose the truth, and hold those in power accountable for what they say and do in the public's name (as well as with the public's money and people-given authority). Bush's people all say they serve "at the pleasure of the president" - well, bush and all his cronies SERVE AT THE PLEASURE OF THE PEOPLE. They easily and dismissively and cavalierly forget that. It's the responsibility of people like her in the media to make sure they DON'T, or if they have, to make sure that situation is rectified, and PRONTO.

Let's put it this way: she surely would feel so obligated... if this were Clinton, would she not?

You had every right to call her on the carpet like that. People like her continue in their media malpractice precisely BECAUSE not enough folks like you confront them and force them to be more responsible. GOOD FOR YOU!!!! I hope you run into more of those media whores, and give 'em a piece of your mind, too. Besides, it's much more effective as message delivery if you do it to their faces.
