For MLK Day, a flashback from two years ago...
Hanging Martin Luther King and The Emasculation of Civil Rights
by RB Ham (http://rbham.com)

On Monday, January 21, 2002 George W. Bush signed a proclamation declaring Martin Luther King Jr. "a modern American Hero." Before he did, however, he received a present from King's widow, Coretta Scott King. It was a portrait of the late, great civil rights leader mounted in a beautiful frame.

Mr. Bush, presumably with his political base in mind, started his speech by saying, "Well, thank you all very much for coming. Mrs. King, thanks for this beautiful portrait. I can't wait to hang it."

The double-entendre was blatant, he was making light of his reputation as a "Hanging Governor" in Texas and slyly referencing the good old days of the lynch mob. To my utter astonishment the assembled crowd laughed!

1. Don't make me defend Bush. I seriously doubt that's what he meant
File this under the lame assed "Bush is a racist" argument. The guy who depends on Condi Rice to explain the big scary world to him and tho lose all the important paperwork is not a racist. He's a classist, certainly, who divides the world into thems and us's. But he would not joke at a formal ceremony about lynching MLK. In private, when his guard is down, the writer might could have a point. But Bush isn't smart enough to wing it at a public ceremony with the widow of an international hero.

Sorry, but no sell.

3. I see you suck it up like the rest of them.
Bush uses Rice and Powell just the way you take it -- to "prove" he's not racist. It's bullshit. And I'm sick of it.

5. The guy who would joke about 9/11...
...would joke about anything. Don't try using logic when it comes to anything Bush does or says. Did you listen to the audio?

7. Oh, of course Bush isn't racist.
He just had that campaign rally at that White Supremacist camp by mistake.

4. I remember that.
It's easy to dismiss if you just see it in print, but when you listen to the audio, Bush's intent is clear. Why did his cronies laugh if they didn't get the joke?
