Is there anything Bush could do to alienate Republicans?
I used to think that if he were caught up in a big lie or a scandal, Republicans would be outraged and start thinking differently of Bush. But now, with a bad economy, a BIG lie about a messy war, a scandal involving the outing of a CIA agent, etc., etc., etc., I'm beginning to think there's NOTHING Bush can do to lessen his popularity with Republicans. (Maybe if he shot his mother on the White House lawn...) What do you think? Is there ANY thinking going on in the minds of the GOP or is it "Our guy, right or wrong"?

1. I would imagine something sex-related
judging by the way RW folks got their panties in wad over the Clinton deal... You would think that would get them all bent out of shape - unless, of course, there is some kind of double standard

2. Absolutely Nothing
He has already violated most of "pure Conservatism" - small government, balanced budget. So long as he chokes power in his cold fingers, they will do whatever for him. Their bottom line is GREED, and they will get SOMEthing from his being there, damn the ideology, full speed ahead.

6. They are waiting to see if he is serious about his immigration plan..??
If he pushes it, he will lose a lot of support. But don't look for him to push it.

5. When I visit with Republicans they make excuses.
"You can't blame that on Bush!" they all cry, even when it is something directly related to decisions he has made and policies he has implemented.

The last conversation I had as an example of this was explaining and linking to PBS' "The War Behind Closed Doors" where Brent Scowcroft states that Bush 41 knew that removing Hussein would cause a civil war or extreme religious unrest amongst the three faction in Iraq over control. I told them of course Bush 43 was told of this, but he went and did it anyway, so yes, he is responsible for the religious extremists wrecking his party in Iraq. (Ironic, isn't it?)

I think they'd excuse a romp with Condi or a goat for that matter. They;d justify voting for him again because the Dem candidate is "so much worse."

8. If Christian right-wingers knew how really fouled mouthed he is, how much
of a sexist he is (Me and my father talk about P--sy), how he is addicted to Nyquill (alcohol) and that he is a pathological lier - might have some effect on them. The rest of the Republican party is just afraid of him and his "machine". The republicans keep their people in goose-step by fear - not loyalty.

10. With my old man,
it's not chimpy right or wrong; it's chimpy all the way. I try to have something remotely resembling an intelligent conversation with Dad and all I hear about is the evil Dems and how Jimmy Carter and Slick Willy screwed the farmer. I attempt to explain what chimpy has been doing before and after stealing the WH but it just does not register. Chimpy could be shown on video sodomizing children and it would be ignored by those like dear old Dad. There are many out there just like him. They will go to their graves full of anger and hate towards anything even closely resembling a Democrat.

13. He already has.
I was dicussing Bush with a conservative Republican from Texas just yesterday. I made the comment that Bush was spending money like a drunken sailor. He agreed. He called Bush a "liberal Democrat." The immigration stuff, the Mars crap, and all that just has this guy all upset.

My boss, also a conservative Republican, finally admitted that the parties had flip flopped on spending. He said the GOP seems to have become the party of big spenders.

It is getting out, just slowly.

24. The GOP has been the party of big spending for 20 years.
The thing is, they've convinced the public that social spending is bad, but you can never give enough money to the weapons industry.

14. There isn't much ...
that the head of the party of "personal responsibility" could do that they wouldn't lie or spin away...
If he had sex in the oval office, that would be Clinton's fault. After all, Clinton "set the tone".
I heard some rumor about W. having a boyfriend. It that proved to be true and everyone knew about it... that might do it for many of them.

16. Only if he finally "comes out".
Even if he was caught "with a live man or a dead woman", the way things are going, he could just lie his way out of it. As long as the repugs have a lie to cling to, they aren't going to admit the truth and turn on the chimp.

Losing even 1/4 of the gun vote would easily cost him the election.

I thought that would be a real plus for him as far as attracting conservatives, but so far, there's hardly a peep about that in the media or anywhere else.

22. Some already have turned against *
But some people would never turn even if they lost their jobs, retirement, health care, you name it, and they're the ones who view things in very basic, black and white terms. They confuse leadership and sports - if someone on their team cheats or whatever, it's not so bad 'cause it's their guy. Rush Limbaugh is courageous and brave, W. is a war hero, blah, blah, blah.

29. He'll be raising taxes next year
IF he gets re-selected. That ought to hit a sour note. Actually a lot of poop would hit the proverbial fan about that time. I don't think he's planning on winning any popularity contests after he gets in again. He's barely made an effort with the people as it is.
