How about instead of the Super Bowl
Edited on Sat Jan-17-04 06:18 PM by pinkpops
The Bush in 30 seconds ad could run on NBC or ABC? This could pull audience from the super bowl and the other SB ads.

1. How about March Madness or NBA finals
does basketball have the same restrictions as the superbowl?

3. I think it is CBS
not sure about ABC and NBC for issue ads, but it they refuse this one on that grounds I suppose they would have to refuse all issue ads?
I just think that there are some people who don't watch the super bowl, or else don't care so much about seeing it that they might switch channels during the commercials to try to catch Bush in 30.
So by refusing Bush in 30, CBS might deprive its sponsors of some commercial viewers.

4. Not just CBS..
Somewhere on the Internet is an advertisement repository for all the commercials aired during the super bowl for the past 15 years. I went through all the important election years and others such as 1988, 1992, 1999 and 2000. I was unable to find issue ads. Since the super bowl is not carried by the same network ever year there must be some agreed upon framework.

6. I wonder
if all (on-air) nets refuse issue ads in general during pre-election periods, or is it applied selectively to certain programs?

They are going to show an anti-cigarette ad during the Super Bowl, so they don't even have a consistent policy about the Super Bowl.

2. They already bought 30 spots on CNN
for about one third the cost of just one superbowl spot. Not bad.

7. ??? Am I understanding you correctly? Do you think that...
Super Bowl fans will leave watching the game to wait for a political ad? Only a few rare political junkies would do that. Even I wouldn't.

8. Yeah ain't that hard to believe?
No, what I'm thinking is that the other networks are going to put on shows to catch people that don't want to watch football (such people do exist), and they may be looking for some sponsors, at a rate much lower than the super bowl. And some people watching the super bowl may switch channels during the commercials to see if they can catch the Bush in 30 ad., depriving CBS of those viewers. Also, in some households the remote control is fought over by those who want to watch ANOTHER football game and those who don't.

9. You may pull views from other stations, but not likely from SB.
The problem is the timing of the commercials. They aren't always at the same time. In any case, the ones searching for the antiBush commercial will only be those who are already for us. Choir members - so to speak. My point is that no one watching the SB is going to flip over to find the political ad. For one thing, the commercials during the SB aren't precisely scheduled, due to the nature of the game itself. They aren't going to cut to a commercial break right as the QB snaps the ball.

I hope that CBS, NBC, ABC, or Fox broadcasting will show the MoveOn ad during some program.

I don't care if it's the Super Bowl or basketball or a sitcom or something else.

However, I hope the ad doesn't only run on CNN.

CNN's audience is probbably skewed towards people who have already decided their votes in the 2004 Presidential election.

12. I certainly agree with that
Advertising on CNN seems redundant.

13. Don't forget to boycott Coors during the Super Bowl this year
and boycott them every other day of the year too! Coors is owned by a right winger who donates millions to right wing causes. Please don't give him any more money!
