so what was the motive of the Pickering appointment?
a lot here said it could've been payback to the black protesters at the MLK memorial, but I don't think Rove is too stupid to do a stunt like that. there'd be no gains and it'd mobilize the black vote big time. We definately need to use this as an issue in 2004, but I suspect he was trying to appease the bigot vote. After the bigots swore him off over the amnesty plan, he throws this out to get them to open their wallets once more. So he's able to pander for a few Hispanic votes and now does this to keep the bigots in his column.

also, do you think it might have some relation to the caucus?

1. Freepers believe it to be an atonement for floating the immigration policy

Helping immigrants angers racists, therefore to pander to them appoint a racist judge.

2. Motive is "We do/get what we want"
The Pickering appt has nothing to do with the MLK demonstration.

It's much bigger than that. This is the "screw you", "Take no prisoners" attitude of the Bush* admin.

7. Yep, it's a simple "stick poked in the eye" of all the people who
protested against Pickering. A big "fuck you."

3. It was a no lose for the Chimpster.
He knows the Democrats won't do anything. It makes African-Americans angry with him, but they hadn't fallen for the pandering anyway, so who cares? Then there is the the racists, they love him again, this is proof he is one of them.

To top it all off there is BBV just to keep him safe.

4. It's for the SoTU address
I think the message will be that there is too much partisanship in Washington. It also makes Pickering in play as a question in southern primary states.
