Poll: Bush's Approval Sinking

Jan. 17, 2004

(CBS) After rising in public support following the capture of Saddam Hussein, President Bush gives his State of the Union message next week with a decidedly less positive audience.

A CBS News/New York Times poll of 1,022 adults puts the president's approval rating at 50%, matching his lowest ever, and the largest number ever – 45% - disapproving.

This decline (from 60% approval the week after Saddam's capture) comes after former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill's criticisms of the administration in a book and in interviews, and after continuing attacks on American troops in Iraq.

And there is other bad news for the president.

Less than half now approve of how he is handling the situation in Iraq. 51% say the war was not worth the costs.

Two of the president's just-launched initiatives have met with negative public assessment. Most Americans oppose temporary work permits for illegal immigrants and don't think a permanent space station on the moon is worth it.

Just 41% say the president has the same priorities on the issues as they do.

Only 30% say he is more interested in protecting the interests of ordinary Americans than in protecting the interests of large corporations. Just 39% - fewer than before - have confidence in his ability to make the right economic decisions.

Hey, if this trend keeps up, I may just be hungry for some of that GD toast myself.

5. He's running out of those cards
Edited on Sun Jan-18-04 01:12 AM by ZombyWoof
Saddam gave him barely a month with a boost, and then the orange alert didn't even last as long as Aunt Mary's Christmas fruitcake.

Now if people truly DO care about having a president who WILL listen to them, not propose half-ass ideas, not keep getting our soldiers killed, and not spend ourselves into oblivion, they NEED to vote Democratic in November!

9. The next time Bush pops up, he will be toast - black melba
The Woof Man cometh..around to TIA..welcome aboard

I wrote this a month back..
Bush is running out of bounces - like a damped sine curve, they get smaller and smaller.

See how he has quickly dropped back. How low will he now go? He can freefall to something below 40% before he hits his dumb-ass base of support.

With Saddam's capture, he has hit his last effective bounce.

.....Date....Bush Bounce
1: Sep '01...40%..9/11, but did we get Osama? NO
2: May '03...20%..Iraq invasion - mission accomplished? NO
3: Dec '03....7%..Saddam captured - insurgents defeated? NO

Three strikes and you're out, Chimp.

Like a damped sine wave, Bush has seen his ratings bounce approach zero. That's an asymptotic fact. His next bounce will be a last gasp 2% (or maybe less).

With the ongoing 9/11 coverup, Plame leak, madcowGate, plunging dollar, jobless recovery, exploding deficits, disgruntled troops, Bush can no longer expect a ratings bounce of any significance.

Even another LIHOP won't do it for him. But Diebold might. Or maybe we will see Martial Law. You say you want a revolution?

We are about to see the final descent of the BushCo roller coaster, bringing him and his cohorts to a final, screeching stop.

We will then have to pull him out of his seat, kicking and screaming, if need be.

10. I'm not there yet
It pays to be cautious with these creeps in the Bush regime, and their lackeys in the press.

But I sure love the smell of toast, and this poll has a very toasty aroma... :-)

great news. Wait til the real campaign begins and the attacks on Bush get a lot of attention. He's got nowhere to go but down.

6. let's be happy, but careful
We need to make sure he keeps bungling, and people start noticing what a sham Iraq is, what the economy is, and many other things in our favor, but we cannot afford to get too cocky too soon.

I myself won't truly rest until he is voted out.

It would also help if his negatives were above 50%. :-)

8. Agreed. We can't get too overconfident.
This stuff seems to come and go.

All we can do is help stoke the fires.

Preach the news to everyone you can. Do your best to debunk all misconceptions about how supposedly wonderful bush is. (By the way, I FINALLY got one conservative girlfriend to admit that news coverage is actually biased! She's not a convert yet, but this was still a biggie.)

Write emails and letters to ALL the columnists/reporters/op-ed writers you can - you'll usually find their email addresses at the bottom of whatever they wrote. If they think we don't care, they won't, either. HOLD THEIR FEET TO THE FIRE. If they hear from people like us often enough, eventually it'll start getting through to them.

Keep that TOLL FREE CAPITOL HILL SWITCHBOARD NUMBER handy:

1 (800) 839 - 5276. Yes I know people are on vacation, but their offices are still open.

GIVE, if you can, to the candidate of your choice. If you can't, then hold off til we have a nominee, and give then.

KEEP YOURSELF INFORMED!!! Stay current, here on DU, or Buzzflash, or WHEREVER. You MUST be fully armed with facts at all times, to refute what people say. Old mistaken notions sometimes die really hard. But people can't avoid facts for long. It's amazing how some people's minds can be changed just by hearing something concrete and specific that they had NOT heard because the lapdog media hasn't bothered with it. TRULY!

Until the media wakes up and starts actually doing its job again, we must face the fact that it's all up to US. But there are more of us all the time.

DO NOT LOSE HOPE! If you do, we ALL lose. Period.

13. I smell blood!
Did someone just dump a bucket of monkey blood in the shark tank?

Bush is finished, its just a matter of time until we clean up the loose ends. He can't keep his head above water, even if he caught Osama people don't trust him enough for him to win legit just based on the numbers. And if he pulls the Diebold thing, that could touch off Civil War II.

This should be an interesting two years.

14. After the SOTU
They'll shoot right back up...he'll tell another truckload of lies.

The dunderheads and Pollyanna's will believe him, the media will have their lips firmly wrapped around his a**.

Too many people are still stupid and clueless. They'll buy whatever snake oil Gee the W is selling. The media will help him market it.
