Young Rethugs Try to Break up Dem Caucus Rally
Edited on Sun Jan-18-04 11:09 AM by RainDog
I'll have to go back and get the links, but on Atrios and The Daily Kos, both have links to people who were at a rally at Drake U. in Iowa where Joan Jett and J. Garafolo were on stage.

One of them pushed Jett, Dean supporters surrounded the disruptors, Jett, on the advice of a Marine, started leading everyone in singing The Star Spangled Banner... which someone commented on a blog was like the scene out of Casablanca when the patrons of Rick's Cafe break out in The Marseilles and silence the Nazis...

anyway, I'll go get some links.

apparently someone got video of the event. Fox News was there, and though some thought that was a little "convenient" others said that Fox is doing the most coverage in the area (no doubt feeding to Rove...)

here's a link to Atrios, a couple of entries down

13. Here's what to do
the next time this happens, and it wil.

Identify the disrupters. Link arms around each one, and march them toward whatever is appropriate, the exit or the cops. Either evict them or make a citizen's arrest in front of the cops. Get it? Identify, isolate, deactivate, and either eject or humiliate. Don't let right wing violence give US the bad rap.

We discovered this method all too late in the 60s. Take it to heart now, and don't let the RNC convention be remembered for LEFT VIOLENCE, the way the cop violence was in 1968. That led to 8 years of Nixon. Don't repeat this sad history.

This is important. Pass it on.

Pacifism cost us the 2000 election. Beat the hell out of the Republicans. Beat them until they're unconscious.

26. Surrounding disruptors with linked arms is excellent
You control them, then march them wherever you want to take them. Shouting (not antagonisticly, shout anything - the point is to overwhelm) while doing this helps to. That's what was done with disruptors in the march in DC last fall. It worked WONDERFULLY.

9. The difference now
Is that people like me are on to their tactics, and, frankly, I've had it with the Bush brownshirts.

If they try to pull another Florida, I will be there, this time, unlike 2000.

If they want a fight, this mother of two is ready to give back whatever bullshit they dish out.

I'm not scared of some college rethug prick. In fact, younger men are soooo easy... :)

And I know that you and I are not the only two who feel this way.

Did you see the NYTimes Editorial called "Fixing Democracy?"

It's in today's paper, and is really, really important because it acknowledges EVERY concern about voting expressed here.

It doesn't point fingers at one party or the other, but rather takes a bipartisan view that honest voting rightly is a bipartisan issue.

The Bush thugs have gone too far, and the Love Train of Democracy is gaining steam... these outrages will not be allowed to stand again.

Here's a link to the print-version NYTimes editorial. Copy and leave at coffee houses, Burger Kings, doctor's offices...

5. Daily Kos entry
http://travis-bushman.dailykos.com/story/2004/1/17/23537/3980

Joan was just getting started on her first number when about 30 Young Repubs stormed in with signs, banners and chants of "GEORGE BUSH" - and that explained why the Fox News crews were covering a Democratic event.

I had brought a corps of Stormers up from HQ as advance reinforcements with plenty of signs, planning to just run a normal rally and flyering operation. Little did we know...

We managed to hold them off just at the entrance, with a jillion Dean signs and banners I'd pre-emptively requisitioned from HQ providing visual blockage. It was a media circus with at least ten camera crews running over the Bushies and Stormers alike. Janeane provided comic relief by posing for pictures amidst the chaos.

Thankfully, the forces of good retained control of the sound system and began drowning out the Repubs... Joan broke into a spontaneous rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, which quickly shut the Rethugs up.

8. The brown shirts at it again
The reason it is reasonable to make connections between la Bush*
and the Nazis is they are using the same words and methods. We
need to get the names of these clan members and post them, these
cowards always depend on gangs and the better nature of their
"enemy's". It's time to realize we will have much more of this and
that faux news is an integral part of the program. We have to
shame these people at their place of work and their church so they
they have to explain their criminal actions. We need to give them
no pass and no peace.

from what I understand, there is not evidence they staged this one...though I know there has been one event which was questionable..I forget what is was.

I guess you'd have to know if Fox was covering different events before this one...with Garafolo there, Fox's voice of the opposition leading up to the invasion, it seems like it would make sense for them to cover an event where she was featured.

40. Please tell her, and the others who were there
THANK YOU from so many around the country.

They have made the first stand against the rethug tactics. They have said no to KKKarl Rove's deluded apparatchiks.

Tell them that NONE OF US will allow the same sort of thing to occur with the faked Bush protestors that we saw in Florida.

I believe in non-violent means. I really like the idea of the linked arms and shoutdowns for intruders.

But if I were in a situation where someone was pushing another person around, I would definitely be able to find my inner bitch.

A long time ago I was mugged when I lived in Miami, FL. I never knew how I would respond in such a situation until that moment.

And what I found out was that I fought back.

That was an interesting life lesson.

28. No.
No direct evidence, only that they were there recording the event and there are suspicions. Fox at a rock concert aimed at kids too young to vote - why?

The other event you are referring to was also the one that made me suspicious, the 39+ hour political rally in the Senate on Democrats filibustering Bush's federal judge nominees.

"WASHINGTON - November 21 - The wall between objective journalism and partisan politicking at Fox News fell last week when it became clear that Fox News staff contributed to the orchestration of the Republican-led 39-hour Senate talk-a-thon intended to counter the Democrat filibuster against four of President Bush's most radically conservative judicial nominees....Fox News has clearly become the public relations wing of the Republican Party,” said Eli Pariser, international campaigns director for MoveOn.org....The idea for the food-and-cot political spectacle, also known as “Justice for Judges Marathon,” had its origins on the editorial pages of the Rupert Murdoch-owned Weekly Standard. Also owned by Murdoch, Fox News took the idea a step further. Fox News anchors Brit Hume and Tony Snow pitched the idea outright to Senator Majority Leader Bill Frist on the October 26th broadcast of Fox News Sunday. Two weeks after Frist appeared on the show, the two-day marathon was announced."
<http://www.commondreams.org/scriptfiles/news2003/1121-09.htm>

For another shot at Roger Ailes and Fox:
"...in the days after September 11, the channel's chairman Roger Ailes stepped outside his role as a purveyor of news and secretly acted as an adviser to President Bush.

In Bush At War, a new book by Bob Woodward, the veteran Washington Post journalist recounts how Ailes, a former Republican party strategist, sent a "back-channel message" via Bush's chief political aide, Karl Rove. It warned, in Woodward's words, that "the American public would tolerate waiting and would be patient, but only as long as they were convinced that Bush was using the harshest measures possible. Support would dissipate if the public did not see Bush acting harshly." The message was given in secret, Woodward said, because "Ailes was not supposed to be giving political advice
."

for those two issues, alone...

especially the disgusting camp out...although the advice from Ailes is also disturbing, considering the "poll value" of that advice, and the fact that it echoes the neocon playbook to a tee.

I'll make sure to bookmark these for future reference.

29. mob rule organizer: Jason Cole google
"... and stormed in.

"There are seven of us who worked really hard at putting this conference together, said Jason Cole of the college republicans. "so, we met, discussed and majority ruled. We went down there."

our next Karl Rove??????

As Orcinus reports, the rhetoric of the right is becoming more alarming as they become more self-assured about their goals. One of the most worrisome facts about our current politics is the almost deification of Bush in his role as Commander in Chief. The Salon article Orcinus refers to shows the true believer Republicans espousing an almost cult-like belief in Bush as leader:

Some attendees were driven by spiritual conviction that seamlessly encompassed faith in two messiahs, Jesus and Bush. For the true believers, Bush is a man of wonder-working powers. Jason Cole, a 22-year-old senior at the University of Iowa, grew enamored of Bush when he heard his earnest, simple talk of God during the 1999 presidential campaign. Cole says he has little interest in working in politics beyond the 2004 election. "I do it," he explained simply, "because I love President Bush."

If Bush and his successors remain in power for the next decade, Cole believes, we'll have a world "where leaders say what they mean and follow it up ... millions and millions will enjoy the freedoms that our forefathers fought for. Democracy will spread across the world. Iraq was a phenomenal start. In Africa, the United States is helping Liberia and giving AIDS relief. Soon, they'll be back on the economic track. People now living in squalor will experience a home-owning boom like that following World War II. Look at how Staten Island was developed ..."

The College Republican leadership echoed this pious optimism. Paul Gourley, the party's treasurer, is a chiseled, broad-shouldered 21-year-old from South Dakota. "I am religious, and my religious beliefs steer me towards this party," he says. Bush is somebody "students can identify with, somebody students can follow. His energy, his passion for America and freedom and his religious beliefs ... I think he's going to be one of history's great presidents. We're all honored to live during this presidency."

this guy gets around

here, he is found attacking Clark

Clark's talk was not supposed to be a campaign stop. Being a public institution, the U of I does not support political candidates. The university arranged to have him as a paid lecturer in March, back when major combat operations were taking place in Iraq and Clark was a military analyst on cable news. But Jason Cole with the Iowa Federation of College Republicans says the contract terms should have changed once Clark made his presidential bid. "To have any presidential candidate come to the crucial caucus state of Iowa while being paid, having an event in a public building, having public staff that's being paid with our tax dollars man the event, have the security here paid with our tax dollars, that's just inappropriate," says Cole.
http://www.kcrg.com/article.aspx?art_id=66802&cat_id=123

For crying out loud! Now, this from a person that thinks it's ok for the President of the United States to expend tax dollars to campaign for the last two and a half years using Air Force One. Anyone logging those miles?????? Don't worry Jason, I won't send a bill for the security or the use of the flashlight. LOL
http://www.coloradoforclark.com/Portal/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=114

Can't tell if he is a student at Iowa or Kirkwood Community College

UI law students Michael Davis and Annette Stewart, and Kirkwood student Jason Cole, chairman of the Iowa Federation of College Republicans, filed the complaint Wednesday with the FEC. The complaint alleged violations by Clark, UI, the UI College of Law, the UI Foundation and the Richard S. Levitt Family Endowment Fund.http://www.press-citizen.com/news/101003clark.htm

Hope this isn't the same person who worked for a Democrat in Kansas
Jason Cole, senior in political science and philosophy, said he also does the odd jobs campaigns require. Cole is taking this semester off to work as research director and treasurer in Democrat John Frieden's U.S. House of Representatives campaign against Republican Jim Ryun.

31. Kult Kristians are so sad
really. they are being used by Bush and they don't realize how he is exploiting their faith for all sorts of, frankly, evil purposes.

Gee, I wonder if Jesus would think it's good to mock a woman about to be executed--as their dear leader did with Karly Faye Tucker?

Gee, I wonder if Jesus thinks it's good for Pat Robertson to use Christianity as a disguise for his mineral biz in Liberia?

It's just sad that these people are so uninformed and so easily manipulated.

--yes, it's more than ironic that Cole would complain about a Clark trip but fail to note how many of our tax dollars are used to allow Bush to campaign around the country.

44. This crap started in 1980.
They would get obnoxious cheerleaders from prep schools to heckle and “cheer” during campaign stops. By ’84 they had a “Ghostbusters” theme I forget what exactly they called themselves.

We have taken the high ground until recently and now we get “free speech zones.”

They need “free speech zones” as well.
