Military Families to Hold Candle Light Vigil During SOTU
Military Families Hold Candle Light Vigil at the U.S. Capitol During State of Union Address

‘Remembering Lives Lost to a Lie'

WASHINGTON, DC - On January 20, during the State of the Union address, Military Families Speak Out – supported by Veterans for Peace, other peace groups and faith communities in the Washington, D.C. area – will mount a powerful, respectful remembrance of 500 American soldiers who have died in Iraq, together with penitential prayer for them and the estimated 9,000 Iraqi civilians who have died in the war and the chaos that followed.

WHO: Military Families, Veterans, Peace activists and others
WHAT: Candle light Vigil and remembrance of American and Iraqi lives lost in Iraq war
WHEN: 7:30pm - 9:30pm Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004
WHERE: 3rd Street NW between Constitution and Independence Avenues

At last year's State of the Union President Bush deliberately frightened the American people and rushed the nation to war on the basis of these now-famous "16 words" that, at that time they were spoken, were known by the Administration to be false:

"The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."

Soldiers were sent to war on the basis of this lie and others told about weapons of mass destruction. American soldiers and Iraqi innocents died because of such lies.

Very soon the "official" 500th American soldier will die by hostile fire in Iraq. More than 500 have already died if accidents and suicide are counted. Credible estimates of Iraqi civilians killed are put between 8,000 and 10,000, both as a direct result of the war and because of the whirlwind of violence and insecurity that followed and continues to this day. Since the last State of the Union, our nation has been diminished by the loss of all these precious lives.

Therefore, beginning at 7:30 PM on January 20, demonstrators will form a human chain of remembrance stretching along 3rd Street NW between Constitution and Independence Avenues. Each person will bear the name of a soldier who died in Iraq and hold a candle to symbolize the light of that person's life. Along the line will be persons bearing the names of Iraqi civilians as well. We will bear witness to these lost lives as the President and VIPs pass by in their dark vehicles on the way to the Capitol.

At the very moment that President Bush begins his State of the Union speech, a banner with the "16 words" will begin a death march down the line of lights. As it moves, a drum will sound and the people will call out the name of each fallen soldier, stating their rank, full name, branch of service and age at death. Iraqi names will be remembered and called out. The candle will then be extinguished to symbolize that President Bush's words brought death to this person and cast a pall of darkness over the nation.

23. Local vigils could be in front of the Network affiliates stations !
Local vigils in front of the network affiliates whose networks prop up this regime with all the propaganda they spin for him and all the truth they fail to report about these lying murderers.

2. Yeow! Can the media resist airing this?
Nevermind. They can and will.

I'm sure Capitol police will arrest them all for causing a "fire hazard".

4. <blush> actually I contacted Guy about this
and encouraged Mari333 to make the call. she did great!

her thread died so I wanted to repost. she did suggest that people outside of DC hold their own candle vigils in solidarity.

they are working on getting C-Span to cover it.

also, Guy James will be there for the speech and hopes to join the event too....

i've sent this to malloy, rhodes, buzzflash, truthout, etc.

spread the word. the families deserve support

5. Coverage
It would be wonderful to see the coverage of this as a Split Screen with the SOTU address televised on one side and the Vigil on the other.

Thanks for the welcome...I've been a lurker for a while and have thoroughly enjoyed myself with this great big ol' DU world. It's provocative and downright irreverent, but passionate and true...that is a good thang!

18. Welcome to DU, wolfgirl!
More fun than mud-wrestling with Mel Gibson, Ashton Kutcher, Heath Leger, Orlando Bloom, and Hugh Jackman! Oh, almost forgot - Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues! Oh yeah, and Thom, that decorator guy on "Queer Eye"... (sigh! yum!)

Sorry - just feeling trivial on a nice, cloudy, lazy Sunday morning...

if you EVER find yourselves in an argument/disagreement/debate with some bush-lover about the war (and what an unpatriotic, Commie shit you are for opposing it), be sure to cite that site. If they're still gung-ho for war, suggest they go read what the Military Families Speak Out - ABOUT. Might help open their eyes a little. These folks speak a LOT more eloquently, and with a LOT more credibility, than anyone else, because they're quite literally on the front lines of this debacle.

on edit - just wanted to make sure I got the site correct - it's well worth repeating.

Your trivial thoughts created quite an interesting mental picture - you're right, it's not too bad a way to spend a lazy, overcast day.

28. Well, if you like THAT mental picture, you should see the guy who
owns the karate school where the kids and I hang out. VERY sexy. Also teaches cardio. And in that case, he never wears very many clothes! I'd definitely put him in the mud-wrestling events, too. I know there are more men I could list, but I can't think of 'em just now. And let's not forget Luke Wilson and Sam and Frodo.

I'd throw John Cleese in the mud, too, just because I've always loved him, I think funny is sexy, and I don't mind his age. I should talk - I'm 50! And might as well add Patrick Stewart in, too. He actually made bald sexy.

Enough of trivia! At least for the next few minutes...

getting the TRUTH out to the sheeple. We need to wake them up...we're

34. Imagine...just ONE person in every town square in America...reading
the 500 names of the dead American soldiers....nice tribute....

I'll be here in DC, STANDING UP with our military families...

but my hopes are that YOUNG Americans consider making the effort to read the names of the 500 dead in their own town squares...it would be such a simple effort, but with high impact....
