Has this been reported here? Queen and Blair get into it over Iraq
THE Queen forced Tony Blair to make changes in the New Year's Honours list because she thought it too political.

It is the first time in modern history that a monarch has refused to agree the names put forward by a Prime Minister.

The pair have secretly been at loggerheads over a number of key issues for months.

But the rift widened even further when The Queen took the unprecedented step of blocking some of the New Year awards.

But her block on the new peers took Downing Street and Commons business managers by surprise.

"Of course, both in public and in private, all the diplomatic niceties are observed.

"But signs of tension are definitely there. The Queen has little room to show her displeasure because of her constitutional role as titular head of State.

We Brits are in the invidious position of relying on the 'old establishment' (ie hereditary monarchy, the House of Lords and the judiciary) to protect us from the madness of King Tony. Unfortunately, the alternative of Michael Howard and the modern Conservative party is even worse. They all want to go off to war for the Bush junta.

Strangely, it appears that behind closed doors it is the British military who have expressed most doubts about the wisdom of the Iraq action. Perhaps their folk memory of Empire reminds them that such ventures nearly always end badly.
