Democrats sell out in California to the Gropenfuhrer
Edited on Tue Jan-20-04 05:50 PM by Skinner
Looks like they are learning from our leaders in Washington: From today's LA Times

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-caldems19jan19,1,5453321.story?coll=la-headlines-california

SAN JOSE — Bob Harmon rose in protest Sunday when state Democratic leaders signaled that they would not fight the $15-billion debt proposal that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger put on the March ballot.

"If this party stands for nothing, then we can expect nothing from the voters in return," the Marin County law student told fellow delegates at the state Democratic convention.

Harmon lost the battle: The party took no position on the ballot measure.

The dispute reflected not just tensions among Democrats over how aggressively to challenge the Republican governor, but also the more fundamental split — both in California and nationally — between liberals and moderates over the party's direction.

1. They know the bond measure is likely to lose in the election.
it is very unpopular with the voters. I guess they're leaving it up to us to vote it down so the repukes can't blame it on the dem legislators.

3. Right on, Bob!!
If this party stands for nothing, then we can expect nothing from the voters in return," the Marin County law student told fellow delegates at the state Democratic convention.

4. Do tell me.
Other than Barbara Boxer and Lois Capps, I am pretty disgusted not only with my other reps. but my fellow Democrats in my county, who almost seem Republican to me at times. They seem to not be aware that the country and our state especially is being snatched out from underneath us.

6. They wont oppose the bond because the alternative is more severe cuts
in a budget already cutting numerous programs to the bone. The republicans are who will drive the opposition to the bond - McClintock wants an immediate 15% across-the-board cut in every program and no bond.

7. More of the same
The collective incoherence of the California Democratic party never ceases to amaze me. Recall that this is the same bunch that within several months time reversed itself completely on the matter of allowing undocumented workers to apply for drivers licenses (and get insurance), imposed a regressive car tax (effectively signing the Governorship over to Arnold) rather than replace it with a revenue neutral measures that would increase taxes on the very wealthy. Eight years before that, they almost unanimously supported- with little public review and despite repeated warnings from consumer groups- the disasterous energy "deregulation" plan.

There's obviously something systemically wrong with these folks.

8. they are just like our so called leaders in washington with Bush
voting for the war, the patriot act, no child left behind, etc.

They would rather go along and get re-elected than stand up for something.

9. "Jeopardize the quality of life...."???
For who???? The rich politicians, the corporate whores?

What about the "quality of life" for those who are going to be cut off all means of survival???

What is the quality of life after you're DEAD???

All one can do at that point is either totally revolt or just sputter......

10. Phil Angelides will lead us to victory in 2006
Phil has established himself as the "anti-Shwarzenegger" and after going to the convention this weekend, my support is cast firmly in his lot. He's standing up for Democratic values when the rest of the party is busy worrying about getting their butts kicked in 2004. Phil was out there savaging the Shwarzenegger agenda, saying the things that need to be said in this state. Don't count us California Dems out yet, we're gonna rally behind someone like Phil and end the terminator's policies.

11. I'm shocked, SHOCKED!
They brought in Clinton and Gore to help defeat a Green mayoral candidate in San Francisco. Surely the state level demands a proportionate increase in the response.

Ah well, priorities ...

13. Cigars are sexist?
from the original article:

"I think he's a jerk, to put it mildly," said San Diego delegate Gloria Johnson, who views Schwarzenegger's cigar smoking with lawmakers on a state Capitol patio as "unhealthy and sexist." "I think we should take him on."

I'm mystified by this statement. I love cigars! I've never had my cigar labeled as sexist. Anyway, it seems that CA is going to be deadlocked for a time now.

15. California has succumbed to the powers of evil
It is no longer a Liberal Oasis. Satan has infiltrated and conquered. I hope Californians awaken but I have no real belief they will.

17. What happened is during the eighties a lot of liberals
moved to other states in search of affordable homes. What tooke their place was a bunch of freepers from the south and the middle west looking for jobs.

20. actually, it's not really much of a shock
I knew this would happen when Arnold took office. Democrats are currently divided into 2 camps-the progressive, lets-try-to-change the world types and the moderate, don't-rock-the-boat-don't offend the GOP wing.

The latter type is what has predominated over the past 10-12 years or so (if not longer). A large segment of the party is so afraid to be seen as the "tough, bad guys" that they would rather go along & get along rather than take a stand for principle.

I had the feeling that Arnold, once he took office, would get a lot of what he proposed passed into law. Why? Because Democrats, even in the so-called liberal state of California, just aren't inclined to be a true opposition party yet. They'd much rather cut deals, any kind of deals, just to survive.
