The 12 Year Curse. Is shrub a victim of it?
Everybody is talking about 2004: Year of the Monkey. We were talking about the last few times that a Monkey Year has come along, when the incumbent President was not re-elected, and the opposing party took hold of the WH. The last 3 years before this monkey year tend to be very bad. Some examples.

1932-three years into the Great Depression, Hoover, who has not done anything to improve the economic situation was soundly defeated by FDR, starting 20 years of Dems in the WH.

1968-LBJ involves us in Vietnam and is blamed heavily for it. He decides not to run. Nixon wins election starting a new period of Republican Rule.

1980-Carter, who embroiled in the Iran Hostage crisis, looses to Ronald Reagan.

1992-George HW Bush, after having taken us through Desert Storm, and a recession is defeated by Bill Clinton, ending 12 years of Republican rule.

2004-9/11, a recession, a phony war and a job market that refuses to pick up. Some of these astrologers are predicting a Bush victory. I hope not. It seems that he has no momentum right now. Any he does have is short-lived.

1. Let's hope so!
And don't forget also the 'elected in a zero year' curse hasn't reared it's head yet.

maybe the 12 year and the 20 year will coincide this time?

2. No Chimp in the Monkey Year?
Remember, a thief doesn't need momentum.

3. Problems:
1944--FDR elected for a 4th term.
1956--Ike handily beats Stevenson for a second term

5. I thought it was the 20 year curse:
That presidents elected in a year that ends in a zero die while in office. It dates back to Harrison in 1840. Every 20 years therafter, any president elected in a zero year died in office. The exception is Reagan, who literally came within inches of assassination.

6. True.
But the pattern has at least been true from 1968 on. This is not perfect. But someone was talking about this on another thread.

7. Saw this the other day & said YES!
In 2004, the Chinese Lunar New Year falls on Jan. 22. It's the Year of the Monkey, a time ripe for power, courage, action, anarchy and success (even with risky ventures), Chinese astrologers foretell. The monkey, they say, represents revolution, movement and change.

That sounds like our candidates tonight! I think tonight the our chance to throw the monkey and his little troop of monkeys in the WH out on his butt is really good!
