NPR is almost mocking the steroids bit.
Daniel Shore and EJ Dionne are almost laughing while they talk about it. They can't understand why bush put that in there. EJ surmises that they must have polled on steroids and found out people were against them. It's actually pretty funny.

1. I was wondering the same thing..............
that's the section during which I tuned in (I had to finish watching a hockey game first), and I thought "well, since he can't talk about jobs or healthcare or anything else for that matter, I guess he had to talk about something".

Pretty funny.

3. Jon Stewart was doing the same thing..
He thinks Bush should have gone further and addressed the 'instant replay' issue.

10. Did you see the look on Tom Brady's face when Bush mentioned steroids?
Tom looked like he was picturing himself being protected by a bunch of guys that weigh 180 lbs.

I also thought it was odd when Bush said that steroids were sending a message that, "performance is more important that character". I think that's odd, because it was Ronald Reagan who taught America that winning was so important. So important, that cheating became acceptable. Is Bush repudiating Reaganism?

11. Cheating

Reagan didn't start that. These assholes have ALWAYS cheated to get ahead.

22. I was here in the 80s...
... and Reagan and the culture he brought with him absolutely is at the root of steroids, Enron-GlobalCrossing-WorldComm, etc, and a great deal of what passes for "ethical ambience" we are facing today.

It was a "win at any cost" attitude, and people got the message just fine. Bill Gates is a perfect example.

I find the steroids issue laughable. A job would be nice, I might not like steroid use but on my list of things to worry about it is around number 1500.

13. It's like when he did that weird bit about the child-slavers during
his comedy routine before the UN assembly. I guess he loses his place on the lie prompter and careens off into fantasyland.

How trite is bringing up use of steriods by professional athletes in a SOTU address - is Congress supposed to pass a law?

16. Reminded me of sex slavery topic
when he went to the U.N.

Totally off the wall.

He called on the players, managers, unions, and owners to help stamp it out. That affects like 10,000 people - TOPS!

Way to address society's epidemics, Dubya!

17. Think about it...
Bush is a huuuuuuuuuge baseball nut. To think of what this widespread use of steroids is doing for the reputation of his already-shaky favorite pastime (aside from executing folks on death row, getting whatever he wants whenever he wants it, and giving all his buddies tax breaks, of course) must cause him great pain.

Me, I prefer hockey. Which may well have a lockout of its own, soon...

But he made a mistake in the speech. As usual.

Down with oxycontin and pretzel abuse. Support sobriety for Rush and Bush

20. I looked at my husband and said, steroids?,where the
hell did that come from?

Very bizarre. It was so difficult to watch, he is becoming more and more arragant, almost a I will do whatever I want and screw this country attitude. Everytime he mentioned killing his eyes twinkled like the north star.

23. The speech was on in our office
and unfortunately I sit way to close to the tv. Fortunately the noise level in the office drowned out most of the speech and what it didn't the Jimmy Buffet cd I was playing on my cd player got rid of most of the rest...But I did hear the steroid bit and was saying WTF...shrub and a brain fart....he makes me nuts.

24. Bet this was Bush's idea
Rove and Cheney et al were crafting the sections of the speech on jobs, healthcare, foreign policy, etc., and Bush comes in and says, "can I put in something about baseball. PLEEEEEEEEEAAAAASE???"

"oh, all right, George."
