What galls me more about Bush's wanting to preserve the...
"sanctity of marriage" by his endorsement of the Federal Marriage Amendment is, besides the fact that he said he's in favor of permanently keeping gays and lesbians as second class citizens....

Is the fallout if this amendment passes. I'm convinced that this won't just affect gay marriage and civil unions and domestic partnerships...which is bad enough.

This will embolden the right wingers to launch an assault on anti-discrimination inititaves passed all over the country. Gay rights laws in states, counties and cities would be targeted for repeal. Hate crimes legislation would be dead. The right of gay and lesbian couples to adopt would be dead as well.

This is an ugly, ugly can of worms here. A Pandora's Box of hate just waiting to be unleashed.

It might sound like paranoia. But I didn't get much sleep last night because of the unprecedented call of bigotry last night in the SOTU. And with the crowd running this country right now, I'm not taking anything for granted.

1. Once again, Andy Sullivan defends Bush
Andy says, "Still, the good and important news is that the president hasn't endorsed the Federal Marriage Amendment. The Family Research Council is mad as hell".

Andy lies again!

Andy sees nothing wrong with being the Pied Piper who will lead gays and lesbians into the gas chamber!

5. I don't know what SOTU Andrew Sullivan saw...
But the one *I* saw, Bush DID endorse FMA. Most definitely.

Sullivan is getting more tiresome than usual.

10. I saw the one you did. A forking Constitutional amendment?
I'm seething about this, and it won't even directly affect me.

6. But he did, didn't he.
I really don't understand these log cabin types, but I'm willing to bet he pissed off a lot of the 1.5 million gay people who were duped by him last time (I know its hard to believe that many). I doubt this appeal to voter's hatred will drag extremist's from under their rocks on Election Day, but I bet it will bring many angry over his evil attempt to use our Constitution as a weapon against the People.

2. Yeah
He kept referring to the "Defense" of marriage act.
I am a married hetero and do not need the government to "defend" my marriage. I simply do not understand that irrationality. :wtf:
If they want to "defend" marriage then they could outlaw divorce instead. That makes much more sense than keeping those, who love each other, FROM getting married.

I hate Bu$h.

11. Well said. I feel no threat either; in fact, when my good
friends had a ceremony, I was as happy as when my mom and dad renewed their vows. That is--deliriously.

16. The last time * had to "defend" the USA...
he launched "shock and awe" against Iraq. I guess if my home state of Massachusetts makes civil marriage available on May 17th, then we are going to be invaded. Guess I should get my bunker ready!

On a serious note however, I am sick to think that the US Constitution would be used to discriminate against fellow Americans. If, and I truly think it is a big if, a constitutional amendment were to pass, then I would gladly move to another country. Under *, this country is very quickly becoming a very scary place.

18. If the amendment
makes its way out of congress and is ratified by a significant number of states. I will have to consider that option very seriously. I will not live in a nation where the document that IS that nation officially hates me.

3. Are There ANY Republicans ANYWHERE Who Are Ashamed?
Is this how Republicans and Freepers everywhere feel? Is their hatred for Queer Americans so great?

Is Bush* pandering to the fringe? Or has the hate blinded fringe taken over the brains of otherwise "normal" people?

I'm completely livid at this!

4. He's also endorsing a policy which
is aimed at returning women to a life of childbearing and getting them out of the public and commercial arenas. This policy is destructive to everyone on many levels, especially when considering it in light of his economic policies.

7. It was one huge slap in our face
And believe me * enjoyed every minute of it. Here he talking about all the great traditions in America, all the great things about america..etc then he goes on to officially degrade us into being second class citizens.

Yes this will open a can of worms. It will not allow any state or locality to bestow rights and privileges upon couples who are not married. It will destroy the hard work of so many in our movement.

Don't think it can't happen.. think again.

9. The Pubes were up in arms over adding the Equal Rights Amendment,
Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 08:02 AM by blondeatlast
but it's now okay with them to add an amendment that LIMITS civil rights. And you are right--this is only a beginning.

The speech made me angry from the moment he opened his mouth (imagine!) but when he got to the "defense of marriage" crap I just about hurled the contents of my stomach and my telly out the window.

Sick bastard hypocrite! I'm just as pissed as you are and I'm a straight Christian.

Edit: Married, too, and decidedly UN-threatened.

12. Bush and Republicans need to worry about
their own damn marriages. Most of these men never put their women at the same level as themselves to begin with. That Laura walking two steps behind is ownership not a team-mate.

13. Comsidering the "sanctity" of marriage--
I'm a straight, female, married Christian. My "married" (wish I didn't have to put that in quotes, but of course, they aren't legal) gay friends don't threaten me in the least.

I am threatened by easy divorce and the absolute sham of annulment--where's the concern over that? Seems to me that sanctity has disappeared long ago with people going in debt over a 20 minute ceremonythat they often forget is meant to last a lifetime. When the glow is gone and the grim reality sets in the "sanctity" flies out the window.

I've been happily married for 8 years now, never divorced or annuled, btw.

Fucking hypocrites.

14. Britney Spears getting married on a whim and then annulled 48 hours later.
Reality shows like "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire"....

Debasements of marriage all over. But yet the haters don't seem to acknowledge any of that.

17. So true. You are a "threat," but that's entertainment?
Remember when they were up in arms over "sex" on TV?

Now it's okay to marry for entertainment purposes and money, but not okay for certain people to marry because they (gasp) LOVE each other?

Oh, the horror!

//sarcasm off

19. What pissed me off
was that GW said some crap about the sanctity of marriage or whatever, and the camera cuts to Santorum. And who's next to Santorum? The DIVORCED Mitch McConnell.

If these assholes want to preserve the sanctity of marriage, they should start with their own.
