Will Bush*s SOTU Speech Backfire On Him?
Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 08:32 AM by arwalden
In his efforts to throw red-meat to his fringe hate-monger supporters, has Bush* actually INVIGORATED MORE OPPOSITION?

Will he suffer a net-loss when the chorus of voices for equality outnumber and drown out the caterwauling and whining from the hate-filled fringe?

1. I hope it emboldens the Democratic Presidential nominees
Who all oppose the FMA. I hope...emphasis on the word "hope"....that they exploit Bush's ugly bigotry for what it is.

I'm freely using the word *hope* right now, but acutally, I don't really feel it myself.

4. Apparently, steroids are the newest evil in this country. Which is
very interesting, because Bush's bestest buddy, Ah-nuld in California, has acknowledged HIS steroid use during his bodybuilding days.

The stench of hypocrisy is particularly bad this morning.

5. I'm not optimistic.
The news media is compliant, if not servile. The opposition is unfocused and accomodating. Any backfiring will occur at the grassroots, and it is hard to get an accurate national picture there.

7. Is there a remedy for this?
I wish I could think of one, but I've tried and come up blank. How do we spread the word about the lies, hatred, and bullying of last night?

9. probably many remedies
I see no quick fixes, though. I think that in all cases it will rely on ordinary citizens doing what they can, whether it is talking to neighbors, teaching students to reason, ad hoc activities such as candlelight vigils against invasion, or whatever. I've decided to put some of that energy into the Greens, but you know how welcome that is around here.

You'll have to decide for yourself what your talents are and how you can best apply them, then do it.

6. I hope so. So many points that can easily be disproven,
not to mention the tone of absolute hate and disgust at those who aren't part of the EE (gays, those who oppose privatizing Medicare, those who are skeptical of Iraq).

Good Lord, I almost thought he was deliberatly trying to alienate 90% of the US citizenry.

Upon consideration--he probably was. If they don't vote, it makes things so much easier.

10. He was alienating 90% of the population...
this was nothing more than a freebie re-election speech.

The SOTU stinks, and he knows it, as do most of the rest of us. he is a cretin and a one term president.

8. Depends on what you mean by "backfire"
The commentary on marriage will certainly bite him in the ass with Americans that believe in privacy and choice. I think it will alienate many voters who were thinking of voting for the stupid son of a bitch because of "terra."

This SHOULD alienate those bizarre log cabin folks.

In fact, I think I am going surf right on over to their website and see what they are saying.

11. Audience Reactions Were More Dooming!
From where I sat comfortable in my den, I could not help but notice the reactions from various senators, congressmen/women and the audience in the balcony.
1. Tom DeLay's smirking at something * said, and the Democrats not rising and cheering. DeLay clapped harder and smirked smirkier when he saw the Dems would not cheer *. I really hate that creep.
2. Did anyone notice the servicemen and servicewomen in the First Lady's section? They could barely applaud the military references. Think that THEY like this war? I doubt it. The Dems could use this footage.
3. Rick Santorum's pathetic adulation at * when the sanctity of marriage was being defended. Dee, how many of the pious pricks have been married multiple times? I am sure that Cheney's lesbian daughter was proud of her papa the he stood and applauded. SHAME.
Were there any others?

12. Even NPR was underwhelmed by it...
and they are among the monkey king's most faithful shills. Cokie Roberts sounded this morning about as sheepish as I've EVER heard her, and pretty much all the commentary was about WHY the Chimp said the things that he did and none of it about the substance of any of it. Because, of course, there was no substance in any of it, and they know it.

Bush has painted himself into a corner. The country is running out of bread and he is no longer able to provide the necessary circuses to appease them. Bush's only hope now is to dig up bin-Laden's frozen corpse and parade it around on a pram as evidence of a new victory in his endless war on terror. And even that won't rescue his falling numbers.

Sex slavery, the moon and mars missions, and now steroids in sports? Give me a freaking break.

13. I think independents and moderates--even those who consider
themselves religious, are not comfortable with his abuse of the line between church and state, the influence of the radical "xian" right and their efforts to enforce their "moral" code, including ban of same sex marriages, Federal funding of church based services, funding of abstinence only programs at the expense of sex education or other comprehensive services. But, not if we don't keep driving the point home!

17. There is a group of Progressive Christian Ministers that I saw mentioned
Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 10:08 AM by hlthe2b
organizing to fight the influence of the Xian right. I would dearly love for this to be the year that the Christian Left stands up to counter the far right BS and takes Christianity back from those who exploit it for their own manipulative purposes. I too am a Christian but theirs (Xian Right) is a religion, an interpretation, that I can not even recognize. Nor, I'm convinced, would Christ.

At the same time, I will fight with those non-Christian religions, including the Buddhists, Muslims, and many others, and the agnostics and atheists in returning strict balance to the line between church and state-- the balance intended by our founding fathers.

19. The Dems Better Frame This Insanity In the Following Manner:
The Repubs want to DENY people their RIGHT to FREEDOM and PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS by ammending the constitution. The constitution was meant to protect these things, not deny them.

Plain, simple and end of story and I better fucking see this put forth by the Dems in this manner. I'm severely pissed off at this nonsense.
