Judge Charles Pickering: I need some good unbiased sources....
Everything I've seen about this guy makes me think he's a racist. I need some good centrist sources to really take a look at this guy....

Does anyone have any good links?

1. The Jackson Mississippi newspaper is the
Clarion Ledger. www.clarionledger.com

Go look in the archives.

Also go to www.NOW.org and see what they had to say. They vehemently opposed him and had an article on his record.

8. You sure about that???
http://www.naacp.org/work/washington_bureau/OppositionJudgePickering031102.shtml

THE FULL SENATE JUDICARY COMMITTEE IS EXPECTED TO VOTE ON JUDGE PICKERING'S CONFIRMATION AT 10:00 AM THIS THURSDAY, MARCH 14.
The NAACP Strongly opposes the nomination of Judge Charles Pickering, currently of the Southern District of Mississippi, to the U.S. Court

MEMBERS OF THE SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE
of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Charles Pickering's record as a district court judge and as a state senator shows his hostility to NAACP priorities, specifically civil rights, equal employment protection and voting rights. Further, throughout Charles Pickering's career, he has demonstrated a commitment to the reversal of a number of these rights, for which NAACP has fought for more than 90 years.
If his nomination is confirmed by the US Senate, Judge Pickering will serve on the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit -- which covers Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas and has the highest concentration of ethnic minorities in the country - for the rest of his life.

6. I'm not so sure anymore...
At least in that cross burning case, he was trying to get the sentence reduced of the third guy because the other two guys involved had struck deals, but no deal was offered to the third.

9. I'm not sure he's racist...
Sorry no links, but I applaud your search. Unfortunately I think you will find that most of the data circulating is bombastic in nature. In fact most nominees that make it before the 13 member judicial panel have all kinds of reckless charges thrown their way.

I'm afraid that the process has really been misused. Its hard to defend an *oversite* commitee that will not allow an up/down vote, especially when the person has bi-partisan support. Partisan battle or not, this isn't the place to do business. Originally this oversite panel was supposed to make sure the person had the appropriate professional qualifications. It has morphed into a partisan sledge hammer. It sounds like a great way to stop GW's nominees, but the ramifications are long term damage. In the best case the Pubs will use the comittee to return the favor to us in spades, in the worst case the committee will be dismantled due to abuse.

If we want to change the country for the better we need to inspire the masses with a powerful vision of what we believe in, not tear down the framework in which this successful experiment in democracy has flourished for 200 years.

10. One thing I would add
I would also add that the Missisipi chapter of the NAACP supports judge Pickering. From cnn.com

"He has quite an admirable record of race relations in Mississippi and got the unanimous support of the African-American community in Mississippi, including the NAACP," Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pennsylvania, said on January 1.

I think this shows why its important to do your own research on these nominees. Most of the time the story is quite different than what you hear on the news.
