There must be something psychotic about this country.

My spouse and I were watching one of those crime shows last night and she asked a question I couldn't answer. She asked why most of the serial killers on this planet are right here in the good old US of A.

Damn, but that floored me. But I guess she was right. You seldom here of serial killers in the other parts of the world, but here they're no longer even newsworthy.

Along the same lines, why is it that so many males in this country seem to believe that it's their right to haul off and smack, hit, stab, or shoot their significant other for no reason at all except that they are mad at something else?

We were raised with the admonition that a man does NOT raise his hand to a woman, but that seems to have gone the way of eight tracks and candy stores. What the hell happened to our country? Or was this violence against women there all along, just not talked about?

I just don't know what the cause is, but I do know the as a country we are in the midst of a great devolution. We are going backwards, not advancing.

What to blame it on? I dont know. Let's here your thoughts.

1. Get a hold of your self. They are every place.
We just read about ours and the ones from countries that can write about it. Do you not see Russia just started having them? Do you think any country would let this out if they could keep it underground?

2. Lots of other countries have serial killers
Canada just had a case in B.C. and I think another one in Toronto.

The US just has a large population and a blood-hungry media.

3. There is never one answer to anything
but here's my "stab" at it. This country glorifies violence to promote and inspire young men to be good fighting machines for all future wars.

4. One Russian, One Brit
Are considered the worst mass murders though we may think the U.S. worst because of proximity.

6. Other countries also don't have the crime catching/trackind devices we do.
NOR do they have the media that we do, to snatch up and devour, glorify and glamourize every serial crime that happens.

In and of itself, it's QUITE rare.

But violence is almost always perpetrated by males in every population. America happens to be a very brutal country, where males are enraged by the stupidest things.

5. Way to much Television
Compared to Europe where people get out more and see more of each other..here we have isolated ourselves from neighbors, friends and family. I think that creates very low tolerance for differences in all aspects of our lives here in the US.
I do believe we have become callous. Our empathy level is very low.
Ignorance seems to be celebrated these days...that's one thing I have really noticed.

17. Dumbing down might explain *'s appeal?
The process of dumbing down has been going on for decades, but most people don’t mind at all. Actually, as it becomes more and more unpopular for people to display intelligence or wisdom or profound thinking, the general public will increasingly find comfort in proving their humanity by acting stupid and doing completely inane, but very visceral things. Sports, recreational drugs, and mindless media will continue to enthrall millions of people. As virtual reality and cyberspace communities displace older social interaction, and as physical thrill seeking escalates with ultra-technological and bionic appliances, people will revel in the feedback they get from their tribal group.

read the Old Testament, it's practially an ancient DSM on serial killing, rape, infanticide, violence against women, etc...

I don't recall reading about any Americans collecting 500 foreskins :puke:

8. I hate to break it to you, but violence against women has been constant
in this country and many others. It sure isn't a new thing since * tracks dissapeared. I know people who were getting knocked around by their husbands when 33rpms were new. Christianity is full of advice on how to deal with uppity women that men have been taking for centuries.

10. Texas #1
The Lone Star state of Texas has the fame of producing more serial killers than any other in these here Un-United States. Seems so apropos that the Resident Evil used Texas as his launching point into his Residency!

12. I don't mean to be . . .
. . . disrespectful to you but perhaps you were not thinking clearly when you came to this conclusion. The USA does not have a monopoly on "evil" or violence or even violence against women. In fact, in some countries women are treated as pure garbage. Women have no rights. Women are looked at just as reproduction toys. Also, in Sierra Leone and other countries plagued by civil war, soldiers pull women out of their homes, force them to become sex slaves, rape them, stab them while raping them, soldiers rape them with their guns, etc.

I would consider people like Osama and Saddam, not to mention the likes of Uday and Kusay as serial killers as well. Look how many they have murdered. Look at the opressed nature of women in those countries. The torture. The mass graves.

Forgive me for writing in such an unorganized fashion. I was just trying to type some stuff really quckly.

14. Go with your first hunch...
You are right... there is an almost institutional certifiably screwed up culture in this country.

Many sociologists, philosphers and psychiatrists have written about it.

But, we turn our back to it, wave our flag and go out and buy, buy buy, then pay the price for our willing ignorance.

15. misogyny, violence and hate are beyond national borders
Overpopulation and the breakdown in society where people grow up more in the arms of a television set than with their mother. These are global.

You yourself, if you were to rate your first 4 years of life in terms of how many hours of hugs you got from mom and dad vs. how many hours of television you watched where superhero vigilantes beat up and blow up bad guys?

Geez, for me it was like 1:50 maybe. Love is in such short supply, for all the talk... and when you're really young, that is all that matters to keep little johnny from becoming a psychopathic adult. Smash the TV and give your family a gift.

16. If you are talking violence in general
we have a LONG way to go in this country before we begin to match the horrors seen in the Balkans, Chechneya, South and Central America.

Another interesting statistic was that murders by minors is DOWN, even during the year of Columbine.

And if its treatment of women in particular, the West is second to none. As a woman, believe me, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else!

18. In developing countries, the poor can be killed with impunity
Thus, the 300 plus dead women and girls in Ciudad Juarez, the countless murdered in South Africa, groups of street children executed by masked gunmen in Brazil, and so on. We just publicize our killers better, especially if they murder middle class white people.

20. "Life is cheap in a lot of other places."
This was from a man I was talking to once, when I was a bartender, who claimed to be a soldier of fortune. Whether he was or not remains to be know, but what he said is true. What is truer is that some lives are more important than others. In other words it's your place on the class pecking order that determines how disposable you are or aren't.

I mean look at all the expense and organization that goes to protecting Bush. Is his worthless ass worth it? No. But his position makes him important to protect, even more important than the SS agent who will have to take a bullet for him if it comes to that.

22. When it comes to serial killers no one and I mean no one is even close
No one can hold a candle to America when it comes to serial killers

If you want to know the evil thats out there try former FBI agent Robert Resslers excellent book which comes from over 20 years of fighting this depravity called Who Ever Fights Monsters

The US produces more serial killers than any other country. Up to 85% of the world's serial killers are in America. According to an FBI Behavioral Unit study serial killing has climbed to an almost 'epidemic proportion'. At any given time there are an estimated 20 - 50 active serial killers. Those who change their targets, methods, are often never identified. Experts speculate on what happens to unsolved cases of murderers. Some may commit suicide, die, be incarcerated, in mental institutions, relocate, or stopped killing, a few turn themselves in.
