American Jobs going to Mexico and WAL-MART
Hi all. I was just reading in the latest breaking news category and saw that everyone is pretty much disgusted with American companies moving their operations (jobs) to other countries for cheap labor. I am pretty concerned that no one seems to be discussing what we are going to do about it.

There are a lot of people here and we need to talk about not buying those products and writing letters to those companies.

Recently, Electrolux announced that they are moving operations to Mexico.

I hope we are not buying their products! I hope we are going to let them know how we feel about that.

Check out the news and the electrolux site so you will know what not to buy and who you can contact to tell them your feelings. Lots of letters is what we can do now. Think globally act locally!

Well, as long as I am up here:
I hope that you are not shopping at Wal-Mart or Sam's Club, but I hope even more that you are telling other people not to either. And you have to tell them why. Here is some informational ammo:

After we tell them what not to do, we have to give them other options. We have to tell them to support businesses that have good practices and treat their employees well. In Michigan, I tell people to go to Meijer's. While Meijer is cutting jobs, they are still union and they are our best choice right now. We need to write letters to let Meijer know we are not happy about job cuts, but we have to continue supporting those companies that pay people better, provide better benefits and especially provide better and safer work environments for their employees!

K, I am stepping off my soap box now. That is, right after I let everyone know that I have a spreadsheet that is broken down by category and product that will help people buy American made and union made products. I can e-mail it to anyone. I think my husband may have it on a web site, too, I will check. If anyone wants it let me know.

It's kind of like quitting smoking you can never quit quitting! We can never stop telling people to stop supporting bad businesses!

Stepping down now.

1. Good points.
I haven't been inside Wal-Mart or Sams in years. The trouble is...well...no matter where you go, American goods are, essentially, unavailable.

Try to buy an American made shirt. Or electronics. Or almost anything - it simply cannot be found.

The question becomes...what are WE (Democrats and Progressives) doing to change this? We should be screaming our message from the rooftops, and the tens of millions hurt by the present serf-economy ought to be taking up the cry. Why we (and they) are not, I do not know.

2. I sure as hell am!
I take every opportunity that arises to tell everyone I can about Wal-Mart. And it is amazing to me that people don't know. These people who don't read or watch any news amaze me. They just go about life blindly and save 30 cents on their laundry detergent at Wal-Mart and then wonder why they don't have job security. What is sad is that my husband works at GM where the union got them everything they enjoy today and these people actually shop at Walmart and Sam's. We just make sure to never shut up about it. Every time I hear those dreaded words I make sure to tell people that they treat people poorly, pay people shit wages, take advantage of immigrant workers, don't promote women (that's good for girl power! conversations), and sell products made by five year old slave children in third world countries. I can only do my part. But if everyone else does their's we may be able to make some progress!

3. Can i get a list.
After reading so much awful things Wal-Mart does to it employees, I rather shop else where even if it does cost a little bit more.
I would like to see the list of American made products. If you can tell me the website it's on.

4. I will find out about the web site
My husband is the union label chair for his local. He put it together for his brothers and sisters and I think they were going to put it on the site. I will post it as soon as I get it.

buy anything at wal-mart. However I'm in the minority as most people I know don't seem to get the connection. It is sad.

10. "Free" trade must end, IMHO. Boycoting these people won't work.
Edited on Fri Jan-23-04 10:47 PM by w4rma
There must be laws enacted to prohibit this crap from happening.

11. Exactly.
Frankly, * has our credit card and is maxing it out. As our jobs depart, we won't be able to make the payments. And then we (as a nation) hit the wall...and it won't be pretty. Or comfortable.
