Does "guest workers" = potential draftees? |
|
Can I legitimately argue this? I know it was brought up before but I wasn't sure if it was for sure a fact.
Will the "guest workers" be required to register for the draft?

Are you talking about the people Bush will allow (legally) in to work?
While legally they would be subject to a draft - just think reality for a moment. Do you SERIOUSLY believe those people will come and/or stay if they had a chance of getting drafted? They will be back to their home nations ASAP in such a situation.
Usually people come here for work because it helps improve their lives, not to go to Iraq (and perhaps other ME destinations) and die for HAL.
I think the concern that Bush's immgration plan is intended to get draftees is foolish. It is not a stable draft pool.

8. What if they didn't know it was coming? |

What if the WH did a good job progandizing No Draft Necessary and then sprung one all of a sudden? Your number's drawn, report to the draft boards or else? Border patrols to make sure they weren't going back home?

It would take an act of congress to restore the draft. You would have PLENTY of notice about it coming.

14. I appreciate your input |
|
I also think too many are quick to jump to these conclusions.
Still -- do you think that there are enough who are desperate enough for the income, who would stay in the states and risk the chance of getting drafted?
Do you really think that the chance of getting drafted would prompt a mass exodus of the immigrant population? Working in the states remains the only real option for $$ for many poor Mexicans.
(On second thought, maybe "let's scarem away with the draft" is the *real* hidden agenda! ;-) )

17. No I don't think it would prompt a mass exodus |
|
Ask your self how many immigrants are eligible to be drafted in an initial stage of the draft to begin with. Certainly, those who are would be concerned. Those who are not have little to worry about.
Those people who need the money and are eligible will have to make a choice. What's more important to me? Money with risk of going to die for HAL, or going back to my home nation and toughing it out for just a little while until the next US pres gets in to office and I come back?

Yes, I think they would stay if they were subject to draft.
But as soon as they were drafted, they would sneak right back across the Rio Grande. A ploy to draft illegal aliens is stupid. Adherence to the draft is based on a desire to obey the law. They might as well try to draft mafiosa.
Though, drafting illegal aliens may be an effective way of getting them to GO HOME!!!!

9. Then Conceptualize This! |

Would they subject themselves to the draft if they were to be acting as the National Guard enforcing martial law against us Citizens while our American troops are deployed over seas?

regardless of what you hear from the republicans, immigrants aren't here with intent to harm citizens. The vast majortiy of immigrants are good people, and I find your suggestion they would find enforcing martial law on a civilian population acceptable to be ignorant at best.

19. And you ignore the point |
|
that contrary to what Rush would tell you, immigrants don't have a desire to work for a dictator and put the US population under martial law. They would be far more likely to turn on Bush than the american population.

10. CNet spoke of the new rules as a way of recruiting cheap high tech labor. |
|
I guess they want to depress that jobs' wages.
I think as far as the draft is concerned, that is a stretch. I think they will promote joining as a fast track to citizenship.

16. Yes, but in reality.. |
|
Yes they could be drafted, but if that should happen, they'll just go go home.
In effect, "guest workers" will have more options than regular citizens if they are drafted. They have the option of serving or going home, wheres I have no option at all.

You have the option of saying NO, or deserting like the Commander and Thief did! Or you can run to Mexico, or Canada. You have that freedom of choice.
