Debunk: Clinton had roadsides cleared of debris for bus to DC? |
|
Edited on Mon Jan-26-04 09:04 AM by JanMichael
A co-worker (Who while despising Clinton hates Bush too) has repeated this story on several occasions.
Basically that the inaugeral bus route to DC was sterilised of road kill, and other unsightly debris, at tax payers expense so as to not mess up videos (Or foul the experiance).
Is this true? False? Or just and exaggeration of a common practice?
Frankly I think there's a reasonable explanation that's been ignored or it's just 100% bull.

2. I've never heard that one before. |

You'd think if it was true, there'd have been a congressional committee formed to investigate it, at a cost to taxpayers of millions of dollars!
Seriously, who cares if it is true? I mean, what is the big deal? I drive by road kill all the time, and I WISH my taxpayer dollars were used to clean it up. I'm sick of looking at the same dead deer for three weeks! EWWWW!

but who cares? Why are people so obsessed with Clinton? He is no longer in office, he no longer leads the U.S. So he may heve had the roadsides cleaned of roadkill and garbage. So what? The country is going to hell in a handbasket and he is obsessing about whether Clinton wanted the streets cleaned?! Give me a godammed break, and that is exactly how I would say it to him. Then walk away, shaking your head.

10. Oh that's what I do! I just wanted to get the facts. |
|
BTW he knows that the county is going to hell in a handbasket and has little but contempt for el Busho.
The Clinton tidbit just happened to come up during a discussion about entry-ways into developments. I replied with a simple, "That's nothing compared to specially selected crowds at events.", and he agreed.

for your efforts in changing his mind! You are a better person than I am, as I would have written him off a long time ago. I work with a right wing zealot myself. The last right wing wacko thing he told me was that the earth was 5,000 years old. I began laughing at him hysterically, told him that was the stupidest thing I ever heard, and then left his office, still laughing. He hasn't brought up anything remotely right wing again.

5. I think it's very possible |
|
sounds like something one of his handlers may have come up with, or it may be common practice.
In either case, I think it's a moot point... nit picking at best, given the new level to which Bush has taken to spending taxpayer money for his own photo ops.

I would rather have a Government waste money while it is running a surplus, than one that is wasting money while running a deficit.

8. My guess is that it's common practice. When Bush Sr. was president, |
|
they'd do the same thing here, but to a much larger degree. They'd clean the motorcade route, plus paint bare patches along the roadsides green (I am not kidding) to make it look like grass.
We used to wonder why they did that until we noticed that it coincided with a presidential visit.

12. If they took public roads... |
|
...then of course they were cleared of roadkill and debris "at taxpayer expense" -- that's part of standard road maintainence.
If he's claiming there was some organized effort by the Clintons to have it spiffed up for him, let him to provide some proof. (and he'd better be able to distinguish a "Clinton plot" from a general "VIP effect" i.e.,local road maintainence chiefs spiffing up their sections so that "their" roads look their best when some VIP (and attendent cameras) passes through, lest they (or their bosses) look bad.

15. Tell him that is SOP for all presidents. It is for security and for |
|
appearances. At least Clinton didn't demand that protesters be cleared from the route.
