Democrats Last stop: Land of God and flags
Edited on Mon Jan-26-04 02:31 PM by Mari333
I had no idea there was a large statue of Strom Thurmond . I almost wish I didnt know this. UGH.

.........................................................
Sometime this week, would-be Democratic presidents will travel the misery circuit of South Carolina, barnstorming selected small towns and cities and seizing on the campaign red meat of abandoned textile mills, uninsured families, bedrock poverty, rising unemployment and the steady erosion of manufacturing jobs.

But a trip by any presidential aspirant to South Carolina should include a pause at the 32-ton bronze statue of the late U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (news, bio, voting record), the daunting symbol of conservative political reality that governs much of the South and is an imposing obstacle to Democratic plans for the White House.

3. repuke
It boggles my mind why a state would still have a large statue of a white supremicist.

4. Why This Emphasis on South Carolina?

Republican insiders have been repeatedly quoted as saying they see Arizona as their make-or-break state. Arizona is the most populace state won by Bush with a very good chance of swinging to the Democrat. If Arizona alone swings, the Democrat wins.

Arizona's primary is also on 3 Feb. And I am a lot more interested in seeing which Democrat is most popular where it has a better chance of making difference. For that matter, I suspect two other 3 Feb primary states, Missouri and Michigan, are more likely to swing for or against respectively than South Carolina.
