Question of Etiquette on foreign ;) soil
Edited on Mon Jan-26-04 03:51 PM by NewHampster
Thursday night I have the great privilege of attending Governor Benson's State of The State address. Invitation due to business association with the Governor's Entrepreneurship initiative.

This is a Republican Governor who by the way is getting ready to buy State employee drugs in Canada.

I may even be recognized by the Gov.

I do not wish to in any way offend or embarrass the Governor.

My question.

Can I, should I wear my Howard Dean lapel pin?

Seriously!

1. Tricky One
Probably you'd be fine, but it might raise questions about the legitimacy of a non-United States Citizen supporting a political candidate.

3. Why should he be offended or embarassed?
If he is, that is not your problem, but his. The last time I checked this was still a "free" country, meaning freedom to express yourself, whether it offends or embarrasses others or not.

4. foreign political intervention
Not too long ago, the american diplomat to a centralamerican nation wore a campaign shirt of the "preferred" party to a public event... and i was truly disgusted as it amounted to meddling in their elections and suberting their democracy.

Given that america has no problem with fucking with other countries democracies like that... then fair game.

You're a private citizen. You have human rights... go for it.

At least the local people of the country where you live know you stand for something and are willing to make bones about it.
