Bush Lit the Fuse: Chaos Under Heaven, and More to Come...
I FEEL SORRY FOR OUR DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT who will inherit this hell...

http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0125-06.htm

WASHINGTON - Retired Gen Anthony Zinni began warning that ousting Saddam Hussein, let alone invading Iraq, risked destabilizing the entire Middle East back in 1998, when he led U.S. Central Command and testified against the Iraq Liberation Act that made ''regime change'' official U.S. policy.

And just six months before the actual invasion last March, in October 2002, he told the annual Fletcher Conference on National Security Strategy, ''we are about to do something that will ignite a fuse in this region that we will rue the day we ever started''.

While President George W. Bush tried hard to project a sense of confidence and control concerning Iraq and the larger Middle East in his State of the Union Address on Tuesday, a careful look at the news this week suggested that Zinni's fears were not unfounded.

Talk of possible civil war in Iraq finally reached the front pages of U.S. newspapers, while reports that at least some elements of the administration are pushing for military action against Hezbollah in Lebanon and targets in Syria surfaced for the first time since last summer.

At the same time, by omitting any reference to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in his speech, Bush indicated he has no intention of seriously pressing either party toward a cease-fire, let alone peace talks designed to meet the goal of the ”roadmap”: securing Palestinian statehood by next year.

1. This is all such a huge bummer. All the smart minds that tried
to avoid this mess, and they were still ignored. If karma works like I suspect, these guys are going down in flames one day.

9. And it wasn't just this years sotu address. I notice it more in last year
sotu address. The military does not look like happy campers. From the joint chiefs, all the way down to the grunts who were frowning during the address.

5. CIA seems to be poking the bear again by warning of civil war in Iraq.
When the recently leaked story of the CIA's warning of imminent civil war in Iraq hit the news, I thought 'they are still pissed about the Wilson/Plame outting and the slow-motion inquiries so they are flexing their muscle again.

I feel like Jason in the movie 'Jason and the Argonauts' watching monsters do battle and hoping they don't take me with them.

8. It was a mess to begin with...
...we just made it our mess(o' potamia). As in any messy situation, starting the clean-up is the hardest part and sometimes it means getting down on your knees.

11. I don't know
I don't know how anybody doesn't feel like going to war is not a big deal. People are treating it like a football game.

There's a number of reasons for that, but the best one in my opinion is the theory that Americans are working too hard to care about the rest of the world.
In Europe people in general do not work two jobs to pay off their credit cards, and they get anywhere between 20 and 40 paid vacation days a year. That gives you time to think.
