Edited on Tue Jan-27-04 05:14 PM by Callous Taoboys
I've now convinced four collegues to vote Democratic. These folks have never voted before. Talk it up, people.

1. Have been doing it
Work in a Union place and see Union contractors and truckers frequently, and they are almost all fed up. They say they are going to vote and vote Democratic. And welcome to DU.

5. "out of voting" sends the wrong message...
We don't want republicans to NOT vote, we want them to vote for us!

7. Either way we win
I would just as soon they all stay home and just sit this one out. That way they don't have to feel bad if our guy turns out a dud. If they sit this one out we may end up picking up some "Safe" republican seats in Congress and really set this country back on a course of sanity and compassion.

8. Some Are Too Far Gone...
There are those who could never vote for a Democrat for family or religious or other reasons, but they sure will pull the lever for the GOOP. Most of these people are 30+ and set in their ways, it's rare to find an open mind willing to make a 180 political conversion.

There are thousands of fundie churches that bus their "faithful" to the polls...hand them a voting sheet and these people vote without a peep or a question...to me an insult for a person who always studies issues and candidates closely. I'd prefer these people stay home than be used as pawns for the evil right.

I strongly encourage the organization of young people to vote and am active with my daughter in helping register her friends and encourage them to vote. Voting is a right, but it's also a gift...that's our message here...it's something that should always be carefully considered and used responsibly...thus why no one in this household has or ever will vote for a Repugnican.

Cheers!

11. I'm with you. They're not likely to vote for us so prevention is
the better aim.

4. You don't love America...
...if you don't vote!

Why do non-voters hate America?

6. am trying to impress on my son
how important voting is. He is 8 and interested in the news. Fortunately his school is quite liberal. It was heartening to hear that more young people are planning to vote in this election. It is astonishing to me that they are so removed from the process and feel that their vote doesn't matter. I remember how exciting it was when I was 18, I think it was right after 18 year olds were allowed to vote for the first time.

10. been doing just that.
What I found working is to just bring up the subject of jobs, or the war, in a low key manner. I do this at home despot (i'm a carpenter), the gas station, anywhere someone is standing in a line. A casual mention of health care being priced outa site works too. Within 2 sentences I find out who they are supporting(democrats/abb), and what their concerns are. I carry voter registration forms and stamps in my truck if they need to register. It's too late here in sunny fla to get registered in time to vote in the gen election but hey, if they talk to their friends and family about getting registered, someone surely is gonna make the polls. Look, we can do it, I know I'm preaching to the choir but I want the United States of America to be what I learned in highschool it was supposed to be.

12. Can't you fill it out right there and get their name?
So that you can follow up later with GOTV activities?

I thought that by having them fill out the form and providing the stamp and putting it in the mail was enough. I hadn't thought about gotv. Now I am. thanx.
