An unflattering article on Dean at CounterPunch

I mention this article because it says there was nothing out of the ordinary about Dean, except maybe his ambition. It says he built his base on the Internet and was not controlled by the power brokers of the party. I think the article is very informative on the whole situation. It is no hit piece. I am a big CounterPunch fan. It is my favorite place for original content on the Internet. Alexander Cockburn is one of my favorite journalist, maybe second to Greg Palast.

but many here seem to hate it. Particularly since they have had some strong anti-Clark pieces. I've noticed as DU has become more of a moderate Democrat message board Counter-punch is attacked more and more. But then again even FAIR has been attacked on this board for daring to quote a candidate's own words. :shrug"

Superb site (and newsletter, too).

The piece is nothing less than the usual fine Jeffrey St. Clair article -- punchy, acutely observed, with some nice turns of phrase. I liked his quip that Bush is "more Arendt's Eichmann than Hitler," and of course he is correct that the demonization of Bush is intended to inflate the value of his potential successors. This was killer, too: "In medieval times the cretinous sons of the elites were sent packing to the priesthood. These days they run for president and everyone prays for the best."

About Dean, I never worried nor cared very much. He would do as president. Every day it's clearer that because of even his tiny modicum of dissent, he'll never be allowed the chance by his own party. It's disheartening. The percentage of reformers in the party is now, apparently, as small as something like one third; Dean proves that there is $40 million worth of idealism left. No wonder Wellstone, surveying his chances a few years before his untimely death, decided the effort wasn't worth it.
