Richard Riordan - CA State Official AND Stand-Up Comedian!

"Ca Educ. Sec. Richard Riordan (R) just wanted to lighten things up at a speech to about 700 school superintendents in Monterey. So as he was advocating more authority for school principals, he threw in part of his comedy act. Riordan told the group that his idea of an ideal principal was one of the 'sisters of little or no mercy' at his NY Catholic school. Sister Carmelita, 'the principal, could lift students up to the ceiling, and once hit a student 17 times before he crumpled to the floor in pain. Another time, she hit a studen toso hard on the hand she broke his knuckles and then complained about his penmanship.'

Riordan's jokes 'fell flat.' On supt. described the reaction as 'shock and awe.' Some 'left asking if Riordan seriosly intended to hold up Sister Carmelita as an example of strong school leadership.' Event sponsor Bob Wells: 'If it was supposed to be a joke, it was not a good one. Most of us do not find violence against children to be amusing.'"
