A first hand account of being AWOL/AOL
24 March 1952.

180 (me) surrended at 0800, this date, to naval authorities at this station in complete, neat uniform, stating that he was absent over leave from the US Naval receiving station, Treasure Island, San Francisco, California, since 2400, 23 March 1952. He had in his Possession his Armed Forces Identification card and Standard transfer Orders issued by U.S. Naval Schools Mine Warfare, Yorktown, Va. to bear out his statement and verify his status. He further stated that air transportation from Chicago, Illinois, to San Francisco, California had been canceled with only available air transportation remaining to Los Angeles, California. This fact was not checked, but 180 had air tickets in his possession.

Orders issued to 180 rank and service number USN transferring him to US Naval receiving station San Francisco, California in a disciplinary status. 180 has acknowledged, in writing the receipt of these orders. Estimated time of departure from Los Angeles, California is 1740, this date, and arrival in San Francisco, California is 0815, 25 March, 1952.

Transportation and meal tickets issued in the amount of $13.13.

Period onf unauthorized absence (8) eight hours. No reimbursement for expenses involved. NavPers 641 Not Submitted.

By direction of the commanding officer.

xxxxx Ass't Discipline officer.

Page three. Prisoner at large, waiting punishment.

Commanding officer's non-judicial punishment mast.

Offense: UA 2400 3-23-52 to 0800 3-24-52 (Unauthorized absence eight hours)

Punishment: Extra duty, 2 hours per day for a period of 3 days.

Proficiency in rate 3.5
Conduct: 3.5

By direction of commanding officer.

I put this here to show two things. 180 is arrested for being Absent Over Leave. (AOL). (AWOL) is Absent Without Leave. Bush* was apparently (AWOL), a very serious offense. Perhaps the UCMJ had changed betweew 180's time and Bush's time. But I doubt it.

180's offense was very minor and caused by conditions beyond his control, but still resulted in an arrest.

1. One-eighty got screwed

I can only commend you on what had to be great strength of character that you could continue with a military career after getting a hosing like that.

As for the statement regarding Bush* and his AWOL, one of the lamest arguments I've heard the Bush* supporters using over and over again is, "The military didn't charge him with AWOL, he was given an honorable discharge, therefore he did nothing wrong."

This analogy would in effect justify saying that someone murdering their spouse can't be called a murderer if they aren't caught or get off on a technicality (or, like Bush*, strings get pulled).

4. Sir Craig
Yes, screwed. I think so too. I bring this up to point out that military UCMJ is not to be taken lightly. Captain's Mast is a slap on the butt really. You notice he still gave me two 3.5 s. He was laughing when he gave me six hours extra duty. BUT the dictates of the code were upheld. And discipline and respect for oneself and for the service was enforced.

Bush* should have been treated no different upon his very first failure to show.

10. well, then, I have never smoked marijuana
I've never been charged with a crime involving any illegal drugs, therefore any accusations that I ever possessed marijuana, LSD, or psylocibic mushrooms are reckless and unfounded.

I call on anyone who has ever alleged that I possessed or consumed any of those drugs, or has even associated with someone making such accusations, to repudiate them.

Oh, yeah, and in 17 years of driving I have only exceeded the legal speed limit twice.

That's what my record says. Therefore, it's true.

Shit, even if I were stoned that wouldn't make sense.

2. Desertion is more likely
I remember seeing someone brought back to my ship by the FBI for being more than 30 days gone. I belonged to a RESDESRON tin can as part of the regular crew.
Nobody in the Naval Reserves would have been given that much latitude.

This was especially so during the Vietnam War.

6. Yes fishnfla
I copied that out of my service record. I have copies of almost all of my service record. If I want more I just fill out a form and will receive requested information inside of six months unless one has a pressing need. Mr Bush could produce his records at any time and shut us all up. But he wont because he is hiding something. IMHO.
