Edited on Fri Feb-06-04 01:18 PM by TNOE
Obviously Republicans are way more outraged about this:

THAN THIS:

1. a warning might be appropriate here
Edited on Fri Feb-06-04 01:17 PM by Caution
Some people are quite squeamish (the photo of the child would have made my girlfriend vomit...literally). I understand the point you are making and it is a valid one but there is no call to do this without a warning.

8. Why do we need a warning? We get none on TV when they
show dead soldiers, dead civilians, and the stinking dead brothers.
Besides we saw that pathetic little boy a hundred times on TV. In the old days before the media whores/corporate profits controlled TV they would have hesitated to show horrible disgusting pictures. Now they love sensationalism...so we'll just have to learn to deal with it. Funny...how those cows with Mad Cow disease seem to bother me more than dead people. What's this world becoming?

18. Why?

Your girlfriend needs to vomit...as do the girlfriends of every other red blooded American.....and boyfriends for that matter. They need to vomit and consider that quite a few Democrats made that picture possible.

That's a picture of war my friend....that is what it is. Americans should be subjected to these sorts of pictures 24/7 and they should be asked to imagine the face of their own child on the body of that depicted in the photo. Protecting your girlfriends or anyone else's sensitive nature from reality is not a great concern of mine.

Let me ask you this....how many American...Democrat or Republican would "support" the war if they actually had to face what the hell war really is? How many Americans who are closet non supporters might be inspired to voice their opinion if faced with the same. War ain't a PG TV show or a game or a performance for those who suffer it's consequences and it shouldn't for the rest of us either.

Trent Lott and Falwell describe the above as collateral damage while insisting that an exposed mammary gland is an affront to morality. I just gotta wonder what Jesus would say about that line of thinking. If a nation cannot proudly bear witness to the results of it's actions then it should not engage in such actions.

yes it is so sad, that a bare breast is such outrage, but dead and maimed children and soldiers mean nothing to them!

5. As the mother of 4 boys 7 and under
That picture literally breaks my heart. For some reason at this moment, the true reality of the war just struck a nerve.

I don't think that image will escape my mind for some time.

7. Got my weelky Falwell email ...
he's going to town on this issue.

ER was planning to show a partial breast shot of an 80 year old woman during an examination. They decided to edit it out due to this. Falwell's saying how the ER edit shows 'how the networks will try to get away with anything'.

It doesn't matter it was in a completely different, realistic, context. It's still SMUT! Lord help us.

16. Ahh, that makes it all better than
he is receiving 'the very best care'..... with no arms, no legs, no mother, no father (all blown to bits- he survived) no family and no home. I'm sure he really appreciates the very best care.

19. Not that it makes *much* difference but he has legs
He lost his entire family and both arms, though. I thought he wasn't going to make it, but he's a very, very determined young boy, and he is also intelligent and makes his own point of view felt everywhere he goes.

I've been following his case. I think he'll be a great speaker and symbol for the free world when he figures out a few more things.

10. I agree 1 zillion percent. I think if more people saw the "reality"
of what is going on there in our plunder for oil, it would change a lot of attitudes. Another one that I literally cannot sleep at night because of the image is the picture of the Iraqi man, his head back, crying to the heavens while he holds his young duaghter, wrapped in a purple shawl, dead in his arms..her feet blown away.

In the meantime, people in my office are blah blah blahing about the Jackson thing.

I said we have a lot more important things to worry about such as the sham of a war, the budget deficit and all the violence kids are subjected to on a daily basis.

20. Thanks for posting this. Perspective.
Strong stuff, but we are not allowed to see the coffins of our returning dead anymore, and discussions about the costs of war are limited to political advantages. Thank you.

22. <sigh> The 'nightshift' has seen this before, but...
every time it opens the emotional wound anew. I didn't know it was possible to feel this depressed about our country. How can we be so uncaring about the lives of others, even if they don't speak the same language or have the same color skin?

This nightshifter wishes Bush* would see this, every night before he goes to bed. Maybe then he would feel a little remorse for his actions.

Bush's god told him to do this to these children. And Bush wants to do it again.

23. The loss of American lives doesn't seem to bother them either
Over 500 dead, couple thousand more maimed for life, even more thousands with psychological scars...and of course the Iraqi dead and maimed. Yeah, sure, Saddam was/is a monster who needed to be put down--but sadly, he was our monster for a long time. This war was for all the wrong reasons -- mostly obscene profits for the BFEE.

I don't give a damn about Janet Jackson's silicone and metal tit. Criminy, her chorus line was doin' the dirty dancin' in garter belts and bras, there were unbelievably tacky ED and other ads, their corporate masters refused to show the MoveOn ad -- and somehow they managed to whip up righteous indignation over THIS?

Hekate

"But why should we hear about body bags and deaths and how many,
what day it's going to happen, and how many this or what do you
suppose? Oh, I mean, it's not relevant. So why should I waste my
beautiful mind on something like that?" ~Barbara Bush

"I guess the 'nation's grandma' isn't the grandma of those her son sends into harm's way." ~Hekate

25. That boy's picture & 1 of al-Khafaj grieving over 15 dead relatives
Edited on Sat Feb-07-04 06:35 AM by lostnfound
were both tragedies that have stuck in my head since I saw them.

"Both arms and both parents" -- I cried at work over that, and a freeper walked in my office at the time. He was concerned about me. I said nothing, then later I brought him the picture to show him why I was upset. I'm sure it was gone from his mind within 2 minutes.

The other one, of Mr. Razek al-Kazem al-Khafaj, struck me deeply. He lost his parents and his children and his wife all in the same bombing. Everything he ever was or cared about, probably, all gone at once. His past, his future. Your children are your future in a way that your own future never is, aren't they?

As a mother, I feel more than ever a sense of the small child that remains in all people that I see, and therefore something more precious. Nobody should have to go have to grieve for their children and their parents on the same day.
