I heard an interesting statistic on NPR the other day (I'm just now getting a few minutes to post.)
Of the constitutional amendments dealing with civil liberites, all allow individuals to do something (worship, assemble, keep property).
If a "marriage" amendment is proposed, it would be the first to prevent something.
Right Wing thinking. Ban rather than allow. Freedoms defined by what you can't do, rather than by what you can.

Was number 18, prohibiting the "manufacture, sale or transportation of intoxicating liquors."
Thankfully it got repealed by the 21st Amendment.
I think their point is well taken though. Amending the constitution ought to be for the purpose of protecting rights and liberties, not restricting them.
