GOP Senator Supports Va. Tax Increase

RICHMOND, Feb. 6 -- U.S. Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.) announced today that he supports efforts by Virginia's Democratic governor to raise taxes, warning that the Congress could shutter many of the state's military bases if new investments in roads, schools and health care are not made.

Sen. Warner, who has frequently challenged the right wing of his party, did not specifically endorse Gov. Mark R. Warner's $1 billion plan to revamp taxes or an even larger one by GOP Sen. John H. Chichester (Stafford). But the five-term senator echoed their insistence that the state needs more money.

"From my perspective, some combination of additional taxes, user fees and responsible budget cutting has to form the basis for the solution," the senator said. "Politics be damned. Let's consider what's best for the men and women of this great state and their families and children."

I like the fact that Sen. Warner is realizing the situation and supports this idea.

I am annoyed by the fact that everyone's calling it a tax hike though. It's a tax restructuring. Opponents are catching that the sales tax is being increased (4.5 to 5.5 percent), the tobacco tax is gonna go up (finally) and a new tax bracket is being set up for those who make more than $100,000 or $150,000 a year. But they are ignoring the fact that tax on food and medicine will drop to 2.5% and the lowest income level to pay taxes will be raised.

Damn liberal media.
