(Interview) Two anonymous US officers from Iraq speak out

Officer 2 - I want to talk about this and tell people how bad it really is in Iraq. It is a complete fucking slaughter and it is only going to get worse. The attacks in the last month or so have been meticulously well planned and executed. We are seeing a level of sophistication that the chain of command did not ever expect. Many of the officers knew that they were going to be dealing with well trained Iraqi army and militia units. There might or might not be outside support and insurgents, but I know the Iraqis are more than capable of messing up your day. These guys have been trained to fight guerilla style and they don t give up. We are in deep sh.t now that they have started to get more organized.

Officer 1 - I don't think that some of the higher level planners expected this kind of resistance and guerilla activity. We tried to tell them months ago that it wasn t just Ba'ath party members and Saddam supporters. Some of the most highly trained guerillas are Shiite and Kurdish. We are going to be in some real trouble if the Kurds ever decide to join together with the Shiites and fight against us. Throw the Sunni radicals into the mix and it s total chaos with our guys stuck smack in the middle. It s one giant cluster fuck and the US soldiers are going to be the one that gets hurt and killed. That country is on the brink of civil war right now. Years of subdued hatreds are now boiling over.

...

Officer 2 - We are going to be there for at least another year or more in a very large force. There is no way that Bush and his cronies are going to give up all that oil and contracting dollars.

Officer 1 - In the end it is the basic line grunt that is the victim of the Bush regime's drive for oil and profits. You won't see one of the senator s kids over there. You will not see one of the board members of Halliburton, Bechtel, KBR {Kellogg, Brown & Root}, or the other big contractors losing a son or daughter. All they are going to do is make money and send more troops to guard their convoys and assets.

We can't even go out in convoy with anyone from Halliburton or Bechtel without drawing a crowd of angry Iraqis. They hate the Halliburton and Bechtel guys worse than they hate the soldiers. It's like painting a target on your back just to travel with those contractors and try to protect them.

...

Officer 1 - WAKE UP! This war has become bogus if it ever had any legitimacy at all, and it is only when you speak out that you will hold our leaders accountable. Don't forget what this country was founded on. God Bless America! I hope that everyone listens to what I had to say. Don't just push my words off and go on about your daily routine. Ask yourself what could have been so bad that I would speak out like this. Ask yourself how bad it must be when I am willing to put my career on the line to speak out.

Officer 2 - Yeah, that about says it for me too. Just think about what could have possibly made me go out on a limb and do this interview. I am not ready to go back to Iraq and die, but I don't have much choice. I just want everyone who supports this war to think about this, and realize that it must be one hell of a mess to get us to say all this. I never would have thought I would be doing this type of interview.

1. This sounds fake to me.
It rattles off the anti-war talking points (many of which I agree with I hasten to add) too perfectly. It sounds made up.

2. I thought this had been debunked, I'll have to check
I'm rather certain that this was proven to be a created document and interview. It's sounds great, but then, it's clearly "too good to be true" and I do believe some people have disproven it's legitimacy.

3. Sounds like something someone on DU would say
But not a military officer (not that I like them, but I can smell them a mile away). Agree that it sounds like just a lot of very generic talking points strung together. Add that it's anonymous and it's pretty much a guaranteed fake.

How's that... I actually worked with many officers in the 82nd Airborne and it sounds like a second or first Lewie to me... When an officer is off the cuff he sounds like any normal dude out there...Plus.. The dudes may be National Guard...The Weekend Warriors are pissed about all this...

4. Did a google search on the author
Jay Shaft seems to be a very intelligent and thoughtful writer. Why would he make this stuff up?

12th October 2003

I had the unique opportunity to interview five US military servicemen who just got back from Iraq, or in the case of two men, corresponded with their wives so that I could ask questions of these soldiers by mail. When the two I corresponded with came back just last week, I was able to complete the interviews I started several months ago with some new details on how the war is actually going.

I was shocked and angered when I found out how many of the service men hate being in Iraq and want nothing to do with rebuilding and policing the devastated nation. From the conversations I had, many soldiers never wanted to go over to Iraq and fight, and the ones who had were now convinced of the awful crime that had been committed against Iraq and our own troops. I was told very few soldiers now believe in staying in Iraq, or want to stay in the country and serve any more days.

The following interview was with an enlisted man, but someone very high up in the enlisted ranks, with over 20 years of military service. I have promised not to reveal his identity for reasons that he has a family and has been told not to speak to journalists. He told me the Army had put a gag order on him while he was home, and told him they would give him twenty years in prison if he spoke out in any manner against the US or the government.

I took several weeks to finish this interview because of not being able to safely be seen with this individual out of his fears of being caught speaking out.

He asked me to call him USA in all the transcripts of these interviews. I have followed his wishes and tried to write what he said in the manner it was said so as not to lose any impact. At times the interview was very rough and the grammar is not perfect, but I tried to write this in his voice so that he can tell the world how bad it is in Iraq. I truly want you to feel what he has experienced in some way if possible.

the interview...
