I hate to say it, I would far and away have prefered to see the dud break down in tears, but that did not happen.

I think he held together under questions that were just one level above fluff. He may have been prompted (I didn't see an ear piece) but if not he was certainly prepared by experts at least well enough. I doubt very very seriously that his performance lost him a single vote and in fact may have taken some folks who were abandoning him and brought them back to him.

Now, don't get me wrong. That is an assessment I take no pleasure in making, but its how it looked to me.

One thing that influences me, is that I watch a lot of other nation's presidents in similar situations - Canada, GB, France, Italy - they are all completely composed, articulate, informed, and they never say things like, "I don't know what all the assumptions are in that GAO report . . .
