Laura Bush says she and George read 5 newspapers a day????
Bob Schieffer just reported it, she apparently said it yesterday.

Who do you believe?

Bob believes her. I have no idea why (ego, can't stand the thought the prez doesn't hang on every word the media utter?).

I say, one of them is lying.

If this were a dem they would be making hay of this. Either Bush is an idiot who doesn't read the papers (like he said) and a coward for sending his wife out to lie for him OR Laura is a liar. But, because it is Bush, Schieffer says he's relieved at last to learn the truth, Bush does read five newspapers a day!

1. Five "Headlines" From Different Newspapers...
Edited on Sun Feb-08-04 12:06 PM by arwalden
That's the best I could imagine happening. Bush* couldn't make it though the "Goofus and Gallant" page in Highlights magazine. He's a buffoon.

2. Wait a minute. He is on record as saying he doesn't read, but
relys on his advisors to clue him in.

Liars marry liars in the Bush family.

4. Why should he read the papers? Rove tells them what they have to
print and they print the WH lies word for word. All six owners are corporate shills for the GOP.

5. * sat right across from Brit Hume and said he DIDN'T read papers
He distinctly said he relied on his trusted aides to bring him the news. He was not joking. So now they're saying he LIED to Brit?

6. How pitiful she feels the need to quantify it. If this were our former
First Lady the R's would launch an investigation and try to prove she lied. They'd get a mole into her private quarters in the WH to sniff around and say there are no newspapers to be found.

11. Boondocks is a little advanced for him.
I actually do think that they read 5 newspapers a day. There are enough right wing rags to boost *'s self-esteem.

10. Georgie told Brit Hume he didn't read the papers, his staff did
Maybe Laura meant that they read five newspapers BETWEEN them--the comics for him, everything else for her...

So who's telling the truth here? More to the point, did Laura say this because it's true, or because the Bush White House told her to? After all, who in the media wants to go on record as calling a First Lady a liar?

Again.. define read
georgie doesn't have the patience, time or interest to read 5 newspapers.

The most georgie could do would be to scan the headlines of the front page.

laura would get bored reading a newspaper. She probably couldn't even get enough energy to read a hot romance paperback.

14. birds of a feather, fly together
my father always said that.... and it is generally accurate. So, it is interesting that pickles carries this saintly aura. she has the image of a rounded edge sort of person; this is reinforced by her visual image.

However, IMHO it is reasonable to assume that she and george, like most couples of long duration, have shared plans and problems over the years. I think she is privy to the sly calculating workings of her husband's mind and they work together to cultivate the image of themselves they project to the world. Facts of her youthful indescretions are no more endearing than George's.

This newspaper reading misdirection reminds me of a Valentines Day article I read in one of the women's magazines a few years ago. As the season would dictate, she was asked about romantic moments with George. She said their sunset horseback rides were romantic moments she cherished most. Nice picture, cozy, just like a cozy couple sitting in chairs with newspapers spread around the floor, sharing stories and perhaps reading to each other. A few years later, I posted here in DU, asking if George rode horses. Apparently he doesn't.

New perspective on sweet laura.... she made up the horseback rides. and really, why woud a "sweet laura" remain married to this man? ahhh, for the prestige and power???? How sweet is that?

16. Laura also said he wrote her that poem--left it on the pillow
then said he didn't write the poem. Lying is a creeping disease they share.
