Richard Nixon on John Kerry
Edited on Tue Feb-10-04 10:16 AM by emad aisat sana
From The Sunday Times:

“How do you ask a man to be the last man to die in Vietnam?” he asked, and then posed a question that was echoed across the country. “How do you ask a man to be the last to die for a mistake?” The senators on the committee looked at each other and smiled. They knew that a political star had been born. Nixon himself had been watching, and, although Kerry was a political foe, the president was impressed.

The White House tapes reveal that he discussed Kerry with his chief of staff, H R Haldeman, in the Oval Office the next day. “He did a hell of a great job,” Haldeman said. “He was extremely effective,” Nixon agreed. “A Kennedy-type guy,” said Haldeman. “He looks like Kennedy and he talks exactly like a Kennedy.”

Some unanswered questions persist about John Kerry, including his interaction with Col Oliver North and his cut-off point after campaigning on the BCCI issue.

Given that US Catholics are still reeling after a series of sex scandal revelations about paedophilia cover-ups in the 1960s and 70s, it seems not illogical for a Catholic candidate to come forward on the presidential campaign trail. He may be John F Kerry but a new JFK he ain't.
