Poll question: Where do you think the country is politically? |
|
This seems like a silly question, but I'm curious. Many assert that the country is (and has always been) conservative, while many assert that the country is entrenched in liberalism. It's hard not to notice that the political center has shifted to the Right. Or has it? So I'm asking, on average, would you say the country is liberal conservative, a healthy, or not so healthy mix? Keep in mind that I'm talking about the mainstream, and remember that I didn't say Democrat or Republican.

starting back in the late '70s / early '80s, and even lasting through the Clinton years (Bill being probably a more true conservative on some issues than Chimpy here...) to the point where now I beleive that the country has taken such a radical shift to the right that anything remotely moderate is shrilly derided as liberal, and anything progressive is insane, and anything truly left-wing liberal is nothing short of the devil's work.... It's just mind boggling...

I worked on an International study that measured this very thing. The results were something like this:
Self identified American liberals (left leaning) fell somewhere slightly right of center ideology wise when compared to self identifying liberals in Europe and parts of Asia and Canada.
scale: Right 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 Left
When Americans identified themselves as 4, 3, or 2, their actual responses on the issues presented came closer to what the other countries participants who were 5, 6 and 7s answered. If that makes any sense.
The United States is FAR more conservative than other countries.
