Why don't Congress just lighten up on morality???
Edited on Fri Feb-13-04 12:47 AM by Cascadian
I am getting so sick and tired of the whole Janet Jackson boob incident. So far the most overplayed story of the year! I am also sick of Congress, Michael Powell, and John Ashcroft getting on their high horses about what should be censored or not! When a president has an affair with an intern in the White House, Congress gets their undies in a bind, Yet we go invade a small poor country that happens to have oil and we lie about the real reason we did, then there is no problem. These people have a lot of nerve to tell the American public and the World what is moral and what isn't. Then again, I guess violence is preferable to sex for these people.

Let's also mention about the assault on same sex marriages. I say. So what? What gives them the right to deny those who love each other a real union?

I cannot believe Congress is wasting time and tax payer money on this nonsense. What is scary that it is just going to get worse. They are on not just a war on terrorism, now it's a war on "smut" or whatever! God these neocons and moralistic Democrats are sick!

And people wonder why I am considering leaving the country.

3. They just cannot do it..

They all know that if they do not kowtow to the religious fundies, they will never get elected again..

The repubes have actually sold their souls. They were once a party of moderates and fiscal conservatives, but there were not enough of them to win elections, so they had to join forces with the racists and religi-freaks to get a large enough base to compete..

The dems stayed in power for so long (congress) because those factions were not very strong until the manufactured outrage about Clinton united them..

Clinton was "too black" for some of them
Clinton was too "immoral" for some of them
Clinton was too "generous" for some of them

Those are the three legs of that stool..racism-faux moralilty-greed..

Nice, eh?? I cannot imaginw why anyoen would want to be "with them" if they ever took the blinders off long enough to see what they really are :(

4. the government should never legislate morality
beyond violent crime. However anything that is a lifestyle choice (e.g. drug use, sexuality, religion) they should not be allowed to make laws concerning those issues, IMO.

5. Exactly
This is why I have a hard time with Republican neocons and those Democrats who think they have some God given right to legislate morality and blame school shootings on artists like Marilyn Manson. Puritanism never dies, it just lingers on!

6. Don't cry for Manson...
He voted for * just to spite Hollywood.

God knows they sometimes deserve it, but that's way much.

7. The republicans are trying to get back to topics the republican voters...
understand.

Having to fight the bush AWOL story has caused them to confuse the republican base, trying to explain why outsourcing of jobs is good for the American economy has confused the republican base. These topics require the republican politicians to use words with more than one or two syllables. These topics require the republican politicans to "make connections" between points.

the republican voter just can't handle this. it's too difficult for them to understand. they need topics easy to understand:
"boob bad"
"gay bad"
"greed good"

You've got to remember, that people who vote republican are just simple folk, they are people of the land, the common clay of the new America. You know . . . morons. (borrowed from Blazing Saddles, updated by me)

8. if they lightened up on morality, they'd have to deal with REAL issues . .
none of which favor the Republicans . . . it's called diversion . . . and, because of the salacious appetites of the American public, it often works . . .
