GOP Gays Battle Bush
Edited on Fri Feb-13-04 08:58 AM by Cannikin
(Washington, D.C.) Log Cabin Republicans, angered at President George W. Bush's apparent support for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, are warning they will fight the move both within the party and publicly.

Conservative groups are claiming the White House has assured them the president will support the proposed amendment currently before Congress.

"Writing discrimination into the Constitution is wrong. It is not conservative, it is not Republican, and it will not strengthen America," said Log Cabin Executive Director Patrick Guerriero, in prepared statement.

"As conservative Republicans, we are outraged that any Republican-- particularly the leader of our party and this nation--would support any effort to use our sacred United States Constitution as a way of scoring political points in an election year," Guerriero said.
The leader of the GOP gay group pointed to a 2000 promise by Bush to be a "uniter, not a divider" and his constant references to being "a compassionate conservative."

"History will not look back kindly on this assault of our Constitution," the Log Cabin leader said. "This amendment is the product of the radical right. They have mastered the art of gay-bashing after decades of practice. The anti-family federal marriage amendment would turn back the clock on our basic rights by denying not only civil marriage, but also civil unions and possibly even domestic partnerships. That is why Log Cabin considers support for this amendment a declaration of war on gay and lesbian families and an attack on our sacred Constitution."

I feel for these guys. They really hoped they could make a difference. Now they see that the GOP uses them just like they do anyone else that makes below $200k.

I'm proud of the way they've come out fighting. They went quiet for a while, and I know I made some jokes about them. But I take it all back after their counter assault. Their leader has been on TV also making some harsh statements about the amendment.

Good for you LCR!

3. I'd like to see these guys go public loud and often
The problem is, I never really hear from the LC Republicans on issues like this. That's probably because the mainstream media doesn't give them air-time. But if this is something that they are truly serious about fighting, I want to see them making that statement in the national media, and not only on sites like 365gay.com. I want the nation to hear republicans' anger over bush's* intent to destroy citizen rights via the constitution.

4. Actually, although I cant quote which ones.....
Edited on Fri Feb-13-04 09:14 AM by Cannikin
I saw several appearances on tv by their chairman (his name escapes me) I'll see if I can find some links...

The part I put in bold above is very close to the things I was hearing him say on air. Along with how Bush had made promises to them.

"Sauron shares power with no one!" (I may have mis quoted)
But I believe thats what Gandolf told Sarumon when he tried to warn him that Sauron would use him then discard him.....
Boy..I just geeked out BIG TIME.

8. The Repukes and the Religious Right are a recent combo
There are a large number of repukes that are in the party for the economic conservative positions. They usually have little concern about the social issues so the relatively recent melding with the religious right hasn't been too much of a problem. Groups like the log cabin republicans only surface once such distinctions become important.

9. Explain the psychology of Log Cabin Republicans, please...
What in the hell are they thinking by still supporting the GOP?

I'll give them this - if they are old school, traditional Republicans concerned with increasing the rights of states, decreasing the federal spending, balancing the budget, and staying out of costly overseas endeavors, then I can see how they could be Republican.

BUT.....that GOP is long gone. It left in the 80's and will not return. The GOP of today is dominated by the religious/social extremist who really hate the GLBT community. Supporting this GOP would be like a black man in Alabama supporting the Dixiecrats because they believed in states rights.

DU psychologists, please help me to understand what is going on in the LC Republican's minds.

11. they want to change GOP from the inside ...
my understanding of Log Cabin Republicans is that they aim to change the Republican Party's attitude towards gays from the inside, by making gays visible to GOP members.

It's not a completely unworthy goal, but IMHO it's been a failure.

The truth is that most GOP Party insiders don't invidually hate gays and lesbians, but nonetheless they realize that playing up homophobia is an excellent wedge issue and so they sell gays and lesbians' rights down the river.

When they go "one on one" with a gay individual they are much more accomodating (in private).

But their politics is dirty and they'd sell their own mother's soul if it was politically advantageous.

13. I have to respect them just a bit.
I can't understand why they want to work in the party that contains the large majority of anti-gay bigots, but I suppose everyone can be a reactionary, gay or not. But I am glad they are not being slavish in their relations with the GOP elected officials. I wonder, though, if they have enough influence to get Snowe, Collins or Smith in the senate to vote "no" to an amendment.
