The neo-cons are in some pretty serious trouble. Bush's popularity is plummeting and will only get worse as the following stories/events play out:
1. The continuation of the AWOL story.
2. The Plame/Wilson affair investigation, which is rumored to be leading to indictments of key members of Cheney's staff, including his Chief of Staff (whose last name is Libby, oh so close to Liddy, how perfect is that?).
3. The investigation into pre-Iraq war intelligence. Yeah, the Admin will try to blame the CIA but I don't think the public will buy it. They don't remember the CIA saying "we are sure they have WMD's and we know where they are," they remember the Bush Admin saying that.
4. Possibly the investigation into Frist's office over the Republicans stealing strategy memos from the Democrats. This one is unlikely though as I suspect they used the cover of the so called "Ricin scare" to scrub any damaging records.
5. The likelihood that gas and energy prices will go through the roof this summer. OPEC just recently cut production by a million barrels a day, and the oil isn't exactly flowing freely out of Iraq.
6. The ongoing disaster that is the Iraq War.
But here is the real kicker: THE PRESS HAS CLEARLY TURNED ON HIM IN A BIG, BIG WAY. I believe they were simply waiting for when the time was right (i.e., when his poll numbers dropped sufficiently) and that time is right. They will now move in for the kill. They have realized, just as everyone else is beginning to, that they have been duped and played by this administration, and they aren't happy about it.
Even Bill O'Reilly publicly apologized for supporting the Iraq War the other day. That tells me that he thinks the tide is changing and wants to make sure he doesn't become irrelevant.
So it is time for Democrats to smell the blood and move in for the kill. Not the killing of the Republican party (for that would be unreasonable to expect), but the killing of the neo-cons and their insanely dark agenda.
I'm not talking about just getting George W. Bush out of office. That is, baring a MAJOR unforeseen circumstance, a foregone conclusion. Even the capture of bin Laden cannot save W. now in my opinion.
I'm talking about smashing the Bush family name in a way that Jeb will never get near the White House, and hopefully will be thrown out (or at least voted out in a few years) of the Governor's office in Florida.
I'm talking about bringing down all of Bush's neo-con enablers in the Senate and the House. This would accomplish the dual goals of getting these insane people out of power AND giving the Democrats back the Senate and making serious inroads in the House.
Let's do it. I'm not saying we should lose focus of the Presidential race or become complacent in our assured victory, but we MUST take the fight to the House and Senate battles as well. George W. did that in 2002 and got some decent results, but this time the groundswell will be much more intense AND legitimate.
Are you with me?
P.S. And if the voting machines are rigged, we just have to make it so obvious by blatant inconsistencies between the polls and actual results that people DO SOMETHING about it.
On edit: I forgot to add the following items to my list of things that are going to bring Bush down:
7. The 9/11 Commission: even though it will be somewhat of a whitewash, it still seems like it will hit the Admin pretty hard. And, as I point out in a post below, I believe that the commission's findings could also help to brunt the force of a bin Laden capture.
8. The economy: No matter how much the Bush Admin says it is rebounding, the statistics say otherwise.
