Let's examine some Creedence lyrics....

FORTUNATE SON (J.C. Fogerty)

Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
Ooh, they're red, white and blue.
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief",
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no,

Yeah!
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh.
But when the taxman comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no.

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer More! more! more! yoh,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, one.

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no no no,
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate son, no no no,

When Forrest arrives in Vietnam and "Fortunate Son" is the music playing.

9. Yes, but the song had a very specific meaning
For those of the Vietnam era.

John Fogerty went.

10. The term may predate the song
but it is obvious that Hatfield was referencing the song in the title of the book. It's like John Fogarty had Bush in mind when he wrote the song.

4. Run Through the Jungle
Whoa, thought it was a nightmare,
Lo, it's all so true,
They told me, "Don't go walkin' slow
'Cause Devil's on the loose."

Better run through the jungle,
Better run through the jungle,
Better run through the jungle,
Woa, Don't look back to see.

Thought I heard a rumblin'
Callin' to my name,
Two hundred million guns are loaded
Satan cries, "Take aim!"

Better run through the jungle,
Better run through the jungle,
Better run through the jungle,
Woa, Don't look back to see.

Over on the mountain
Thunder magic spoke,
"Let the people know my wisdom,
Fill the land with smoke."

Better run through the jungle,
Better run through the jungle,
Better run through the jungle,
Woa, Don't look back to see.

11. Great Song and misused all the time
I love how right wing assholes like Hannity etc use parts of this song in their promos. Same with the commercial previously mentioned. They always just play the "some folks were born" line and cut it off. I guess irony truely is dead.

Remember back in 2000 when Bush was using The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again at rallies and they edited out the "meet the new boss, same as the old boss line?"

I think republicans suffer from an irony deficiency.

13. Hey I posted those several months ago, but here are some....
other great Lyrics by John Fogerty off his Eye of the Zombie album, the whole album has some great stuff that is comming to fruition, he was 20 years ahead of his time. This is called "Violence is Golden" but you really need to listen with the music to fully appreciate! Makes me think of some of our Corporate Whores.....

John Fogerty - Violence is Golden Lyrics
Chorus:
Violence, (oh no!) is golden. aa-aa-aa-aa-ah!
Violence, (oh no!) is golden. aa-aa-aa-aa-ah!

Pass
another plate of shrapnel, sprinkle it with tnt;
Gotta have another grenade salad, split
it with your enemy.
Gotta sell another uzi, maybe couple 44 mags,
Got a wife and a kid to support,
and a payment on the jag.
Won’t you try this personal bazooka, make you feel like a man,
Show
the little girls what’s what by the size of the thunder in your hands.
Take a pocketful of teflon
bullets, maybe ’nother tommy gun,
Gotta keep stuff movin’ out the door, got a business to
run.
Take it from me, son - you can have a lot of fun!

Chorus
Chorus

Pass another fleet
of b-1 bombers, grab an m-16,
Buildin’ chevies was never the fun of buildin’ up the war machine.
Got
a rocket in my pocket and it’s ready, do you think we can deal?
Got a year-end sale goin’ on,
you can see the appeal;
’cause I’m sellin’ both sides of the fence, that be the name of the game,
I
don’t care about your silly little struggle, money’s colored all the same.
Take a handful
of star wars missiles, maybe super laser gun,
Gotta keep stuff movin’ out the door, got a business
to run.
Take it from me, son - we can have a lot of fun!

Chorus
Chorus
Chorus

Kristofferson Kris - Jesus Was A Capricorn Lyrics

Jesus was a Capricorn
He ate organic food
He believed in love and peace
And never wore no shoes
Long hair, beard and sandles
And a funky bunch of friends
Reckon we'd just nail him up
If he came down again
Chorus:
'Cause everybody's gotta have somebody to look down on
Who they can feel better than at any time they please
Someone doin' somethin' dirty decent folks can frown on
If you can't find nobody else, then help yourself to me
Eggheads cussing rednecks cussing
Hippies for their hair
Others laugh at straights who laugh at
Freaks who laugh at squares
Some folks hate the Whites
Who hate the Blacks who hate the Klan
Most of us hate anything that
We don't understand
Chorus

15. Well what the hell!!
Same Era...same message

War Pigs

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of deaths construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds, oh lord yeah!

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?

They leave that role to the poor

Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait till their judgement day comes, yeah!

Now in darkness, world stops turning
As the war machine keeps burning
No more war pigs of the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees, the war pigs crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan, laughing, spreads his wings
All right now!

A little more to the point...(no wonder the fundies hate these guys)

16. Well, since we're on the subject...
This one ALWAYS gives me chills:

Masters Of War
Bob Dylan

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build all the bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks.

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly.

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain.

You fasten all the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion'
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud.

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins.

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
That even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do.

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul.

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand over your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead.

('nuff said)

17. Donovan troubled my conscience with this one...
He's five foot-two, and he's six feet-four,
He fights with missiles and with spears.
He's all of thirty-one, and he's only seventeen,
Been a soldier for a thousand years.

He'a a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Jain,
A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew.
And he knows he shouldn't kill,
And he knows he always will,
Kill you for me my friend and me for you.

And he's fighting for Canada,
He's fighting for France,
He's fighting for the USA,
And he's fighting for the Russians,
And he's fighting for Japan,
And he thinks we'll put an end to war this way.

And he's fighting for Democracy,
He's fighting for the Reds,
He says it's for the peace of all.
He's the one who must decide,
Who's to live and who's to die,
And he never sees the writing on the wall.

But without him,
How would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau?
Without him Caesar would have stood alone,
He's the one who gives his body
As a weapon of the war,
And without him all this killing can't go on.

He's the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame,
His orders come from far away no more,
They come from here and there and you and me,
And brothers can't you see,
This is not the way we put the end to war.

21. Anti War Songs, Links to Legal Downloads and Lyrics
Anti war related, mostly English language songs from many protest music genres, most with clips, covers, albums, writers and links to lyrics and/or audio downloads. Songs newly written or remixed for the 2003 attack on Iraq as well as timeless classics are among this comprehensive, yet growing, list. All of these should serve us well for the promised "war that will not end in our lifetimes" or at least until the next election.

24. After "Run Through The Jungle," this is my favorite from CCR:
Effigy
(J. C. Fogerty)

Last night
I saw a fire burning on
The palace lawn
O'er the land
The humble subjects watched in mixed
Emotion

Chorus:
Who is burnin' ?
Who is burnin' ?
Effigy
Who is burnin' ?
Who is burnin' ?
Effigy

Last night
I saw the fire spreadin' to
The palace door
Silent majority
Weren't keepin' quiet
Anymore

Chorus

Last night
I saw the fire spreadin' to
The country side
In the mornin'
Few were left to see
The ashes die

Chorus

Why ?
Why ?
Effigy

Gratuitous Tidbit: when some American Indians occupied Alcatraz back in the early 70s (IIRC), Fogerty and the lads sent a boatload of supplies and food across the bay to them every couple of days!

27. From that same timeframe
These 2 were some of my favorites
Chicago--Dialogue Part I
Terry
Are you optimistic
'bout the way things are going?

Peter
No, I never ever think of it at all

Terry
Don't you ever worry
When you see what's going down?

Peter
No, I try to mind my business,
that is, no business at all

Terry
When it's time to function
as a feeling human being, will your
Bachelor of Arts help you get by?

Peter
I hope to study further,
a few more years or so. I also hope
to keep a steady high

Terry
Will you try to change
things, use the power that you have,
the power of a million new ideas?

Peter
What is this power you
speak of and this need for things to
change? I always thought
that everything was fine

Terry
Don't you feel repression just
closing in around?

Peter
No, the campus here is very, very free

Terry
Does it make you angry
the way war is dragging on?

Peter
Well, I hope the President
knows what he's into, I don't know

Terry
Don't you ever see the starvation
in the city where you live, all the
needless hunger all the
needless pain?

Peter
I haven't been there lately,
the country is so fine, but my
neighbors don't seem hungry 'cause
they haven't got the time

Terry
Thank you for the talk,
you know you really eased my mind
I was troubled by the shapes
of things to come.

Peter
Well, if you had my
outlook your feelings would be
numb, you'd always think
that everything was fine

and Marvin Gaye:

Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today - Ya

Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Ah, what's going on

In the mean time
Right on, baby
Right on
Right on

Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Oh

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Tell me what's going on
I'll tell you what's going on - Uh
Right on baby
Right on baby

Sad they're still so relevent today. I thought we'd gotten past the
chaos of the 60's and 70's. Thanks you Lying Murder Monkey.

28. more dylan
I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin',
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest,
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty,
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters,
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison,
Where the executioner's face is always well hidden,
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten,
Where black is the color, where none is the number,
And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it,
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it,
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin',
But I'll know my song well before I start singin',
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

29. Amazing
That song has been going through my head for the last few days. Given the current brouhaha over W's service record, the lyrics just seem so amazingly relevant and compelling!

It always seemed to me that the younger generation may not appreciate the real, gut-level response that the song evokes in those of us who lived through the Vietnam era. Maybe now they'll start to get it -- it's not just a loud rebellious song, it's REAL.

33. Phil Ochs - "When I'm Gone"

There's no place in this world where I'll belong when I'm gone
I won't know the right from the wrong when I'm gone
You won't find me singing on this song when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

My days won't be dances of delight when I'm gone
The sands will be shifting from my sight when I'm gone
Can't add my name into the fight when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

I won't see the flowing of the time when I'm gone
The joys of love will not be mine when I'm gone
My pen won't pour a lyric rhyme when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

I won't breath the bracing air when I'm gone
I won't be worried about my cares when I'm gone
Can't be asked to do my share when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

I won't be running from the rain when I'm gone
Won't even suffer from the pain when I'm gone
Can't say who's to praise and who's to blame when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

I won't see the golden of the sun when I'm gone
The evenings and the mornings will be one when I'm gone
Can't be singing louder than the guns when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

And I won't be laughing at the lies when I'm gone
I won't question where or when or why when I'm gone
Can't live proud enough to die when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here
