25. Just a joke at the expence of the stereotype...
...of people who like to watch cars drive in a circle. I have a brother like that. He tried to explain to me that Nascar was the 'world's sport'. I think the 'world's sport' is soccer. Some dirt and a ball is all you need.

I started a thread with exactly that premise, making fun of the hypnofans who like to watch thing go round in circles.

bet Chuck Berry's a big NASCAR fan, if you know what I mean.

they locked the thread cause it offended too many people, I guess....somebody TOLD on me for characterizing a post as "ignorant"

when I want to take an afternoon snooze, I either turn on golf, or turn off the sound and watch big fourwheeled machines go round in circles

too fricking funny

I don't think these kind of comments should be expressed on this forum. Just because we are sports fans and car lovers is no reason for this kind of logic and no reason to think that * is going to sway our opinion of him.

17. Yep, Rove is wise to solicit that vote
I believe NASCAR is the highest rated of any televised sport and live attendance to all types racing tops other events.

If it hasn't held that title over the last few years, its in the top couple. Lets not intentionally piss those folks off. They are a huge demographic that will play a factor in the fall. Lets be Big Tent Dems and not show our ignorance by attacking people because we don't appreciate their brand of entertainment.

43. AND I heard on the radio this morning (NPR) that the demo is.....
horrible.....on the order of 70 to 27% of NASCAR fans voted BUsh over Gore last time

what a waste of time

sure there are educated people who like NASCAR

they also like Cheers!

so what does that prove?

no accounting for taste

a demo that needs to be sought after is the unmarried, unregistered FEMALE vote.....those numbers break VERY strongly dem.....similarly landslide proportions, but nobody's talking about that

check out what Stan Greenberg (the man who rescued Gore's campaign, only to have the election stolen) has to say about them

Also, if you're claiming to represent the educated folk, I recommend you become acquainted with the Shift Key. Also, those funny little symbols used for punctuation.

62. Yes but they aren't a large enough group to swing an election.
If they were then bush*/stupid would've won the 2000 election WHICH HE DIDN'T! If they voted for him in 2000 they'll probably vote for him this year. I'd be willing to bet the Democratic candidate will pick up more of the supposed Nascar vote this election than we did in 00 simply because America is sick and tired of the world bush* has created. So please don't give Nascar people more credit than they deserve.

Sorry, I took your comment the wrong way. Actually the old man would have qualified as wild and crazy in his younger days. He rebuilt an old Jaguar when he was about 19 and crashed it into a stone wall outside of the town he grew up in. He even made the local newspaper because of it. He's mellowed out though now.

44. didn't let it "lapse?!"
Hardly-0--he was grounded for failing to perform his duty: having his qualifying yearly physical. He was then *ordered* to do so. He failed to follow orders.

HE frames it as letting it "lapse" as though he let his TV Guide subscription run out 'cause he was moving. WE need to remember that he defied orders and was PUNISHED.

See posts by TahitiNut, DemoTex and Trof for the pilot's-eye-view of this situation.

He likes speed. Hmmm....

He flew fighters in the Guard. Guess it was too late to cancel this photo op. But jeez! How humiliating when the obvious follow up to that are questions about his dubious service. Besides, I heard that the plane he flew was going obsolete and there was never any chance he would be sent to SE Asia.

He needs to find that rock he crawled out of and slither back under. Crawford is a good second.

Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 03:25 PM by hlthe2b
while I don't personally care much for racing, I must point out that there are plenty of very progressive folks who do. May I simply mention but one, Paul Newman! Newman, like Redford has always been loyal to DEM/Progresive/liberal causes.

So, let's please stop it! I sense that this is a not so veiled extension of the "anti-south" bigotry that permeates this website-- given the popularity of NASCAR in the SOUTH. Whether I am right or wrong, I think we need to remember to be inclusive here. We need to bring folks along to our point of view-- something that will never occur if we continue this line of attack.

63. Who cares?
I think everyone sees that this is a campaign appearance.

Howard Dean brought attention to the Nascar Dads -- and now His Chimperial Highness is trying to make his play for this constituency.

Presidential visits are a pain in the butt at events like this. Real fans get ticked off that someone -- anyone -- is hijacking their beloved event from them in order to draw attention to themselves.

Only the diehard Bush-worshippers would fall for this one. Wanna make a bet the reaction in the minds of the majority of that massive audience were thinking "What an asshole"? His Chimperial Majesty should stick to 100% stage-managed events -- stuff like this *will* backfire.

When Abbie Hoffman tried to grab the mike from Pete Townshend as he performed Tommy on the stage at Woodstock, Townshend knocked him off the stage with his guitar, and people cheered. Asked later why he did that, he said that while he sympathized with Hoffman's mission, he was mighty POed that he would steal another man's microphone to make his pitch.

Hell -- if I was at the Metropolitan Opera waiting to hear David Daniels perform Handel and if even BILL CLINTON interjected some pitch at the beginning, I would have a bad feeling about it. I'd want to knock him off the stage with my guitar.

Bush is a gambler -- a master poker player -- and he is GAMBLING that if he keeps claiming to be a heroic macho Top Gun, then people will believe it. But given that a lot of those NASCAR guys now have relatives and friends fighting in Iraq, His Chimperial Majesty's "honorable service" in the national Guard safely within the borders of the good ol' USA doesn't sound too impressive anymore.

What going to happen is that Bush is *not* going to get away with this one -- and *now*, the more he tries crap like this, the far worse it is going to adversely effect him in the minds of the American people, who are turning against him, and probably never like the SOB much to begin with. Bush's "popularity" -- really -- was compassion for the victims of Sept 11 and our love of our country, and that's all.

My "un-informed" sources tell me that they can't stand this guy. They thought they'd give him a chance, and then there was that horrific day in Sept 2001 -- but now they feel he has BLOWN the chance they gave him big time, and they hate him for the war he started, and despise the lies, which they can clearly see now.

My pro-Bush "un-informed" sources, the honest ones, who used to praise him and wail as they thought about what a disaster Al Gore would have been, now just shake their heads and say they can't figure him out. My "informed" pro-Bush sources now hate him as much as I have all along.

I think John Kerry is right -- "Like father, like son/4 years and you're done."
