3. Thanks for the heads-up!
Al Franken is so funny, and so perceptive. If Mark Twain were alive today, I think he would sound a lot like Al Franken (with a Southern accent).

4. same here!
can't believe he's been on for TWO YEARS!

first I'd heard of this

read Rich Media, Poor Democracy, McChesney's survey of how media became so concentrated...goes back to origins of radio, through recent maxcon that's happening as we speak.

deals with necessity for structural change in both media and economic systems, as there will be no democracy without economic democracy, and MEDIA is the major reason people don't know how quickly things are changing, and how thoroughly they're getting screwed......til it's too late

7. I never come in thru lobby.....thanks!
Al needs to come to DU

he doesn't know about the shotgum in ear quote (I started thread on that), when caller asks about shooting self in foot.

Al said he knows Bush is STUPID (his emphasis), but he can't imagine him saying something like THAT!

well, he DID, and it's a testament to media malfeasance that YOU don't know about it, al, isn't it??????

Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 02:32 PM by eleny
I clicked on the Lobby link at the bottom of the page and just got the list of Forums. Can you steer me to the right place?

Edit: Oops - just found it! On the Home page list. Sorry!

6. It's great to have a Sunday afternoon Lib radio broadcast
McChesney mentioned some guests he's going to have on like Molly Ivens. Good stuff in the weeks ahead!

9. Caller asked about Bush quote about shooting himself with a shotgun
(he thought it was his foot, but he got it wrong). Unfortunately, Al had not heard about this and doubted it was true, but here is the quote:

In 1994, the President told the Houston Chronicle, in relation to his joining the National Guard, 'I was not prepared to shoot my eardrum out with a shotgun in order to get a deferment, nor was I willing to go to Canada, so I chose to better myself by learning how to fly airplanes.’ It sounds like the President, himself, acknowledged that he went into the National Guard because he didn't want to go to Vietnam.”

know who runs that site?

and did you see that whole thing was part of a complaint overhow the media were going overboard criticizing QUAYLE's lack of service, and ignoring CLINTON's????????????????

unfricking believable

12. I was wrong.....it was THIS quote I found there
Viewers then saw this exchange from NBC’s live convention coverage on August 17, 1988:

Connie Chung: "The problem, though, would be is if, indeed, he made several phone calls or some people made phone calls on his behalf to get him into the National Guard. I mean, did that happen to you? Were you..."
George W. Bush cut her off: "No. I don’t think so. But in those days, people were going into the service all different branches. And if you want to go into the National Guard, I guess sometimes people make calls. I don’t see anything wrong with, a matter of fact I’m glad he served his country. And serving in the National Guard is serving in the military. They probably should have called the National Guard up in those days. Maybe we’d have done better in Vietnam."
