I drive past a recently constructed upper end hotel everyday on my way to work.
Before Christmas I noticed the Hotel had a fair number of guest as eveident by the lights in the windows and a fair number (less than 50% but more than 25% approx) in the first few weeks of the new year. In Feburary they started to diminish and today there was only one or two.
I used to travel for living in the 90's and rarely did I encounter a hotel that was not bustling with guests.
I am predicting very bad economic numbers to emerge...despite what Bush says...

Does this hotel cater to business or vacationing customers. The first quarter is lousy for discretionary travel, but business travellers should be moving around. Less now, though, since companies are tightening up on travel expenses-- lots have been going to videoconferencing and other ways to avoid the expense of direct face time.
Years ago I used to see things like the price of steel turnings going to Japan, the spot charter rates for ships, powerplant orders going to Brazil and the Far East... Things like these portend greater (or lesser) things down the road.
Now, I look at parking lots and traffic jams where people are likely to spend money. Lines at airports. Stuff like that. Sales figures, hotel occupancy rates and all that are more or less publicly available, but most places try to put the best possible spin on the numbers.
